you might remember this from being a kid...

basically it was a drawing board type thing that you could draw on with a
tiny plastic pen ( not unlike the pens they supply with PDAs)

They sold them in toy shops and pound shop-type stores.

it was usually grey in colour...when you finished your drawing - you slided
(what looked like a ruler) across the page and it deleted your drawing
so you could start all over again.

    What was this called?

Doodle or Magna Doodle I think, not far off the etch a sketch idea.

    Like this one?

Should this thread not be in All Things Retro?

Moved to All Things Retro from AH.
Yes; it's an etch-a-sketch (Ableit, a cheaper variation.)

    Thanks guyz...appreciated

now where might I find a similar concept except that you can use it
for labelling VHS tapes or CD-RWs?

They are still on the market. Most airport shops have them. They're a great novelty for entertaining children on flights. ;)

Does such a thing exist?? You've made a huge leap from REMEMBERING a Doodle/Magna Doodle to them having ever been implenmented on the front of cds/dvds/vhs.

I imagine it would never work, the thickness of the cd/vhs with that on the front would be too much I'd guess.

mirror, there is defintely a product was invented using the same concept
as the Doodle except it was for VHS cassettes

Perhaps the thing was incorporated into the actual casing? I can't imagine there is some sort of "clip on" accessory...

Well "magnadoodle" used magnets to create the drawings.
Even though these were weak magnets, I don't think they would mix very well with VHS tape.

There definitely was a VHS cassette label that did this, we had them at home. I think we got them out of Hector Greys in Crumlin S.C.

No, Etch a Sketch was with the little dials. Impossible to use. Magna doodle was the one with the pen. and magnets sometimes to stamp stamp stamp...

You used to be able to get lil ones on a cardboard frame (not the plastic) in Poundshop or sumthn. they were kinda lame. Might stil make them. Good luck with your hoverboards/ time machine thingummy.:D

Spirograph used dials as well. Had a set when 10-12, never got the best out of it.

I remember these things ... but they weren't magnetic at all ... what you had was a layer of translucent plastic, which was set on a dark background.

As you wrote on the upper film, it would stick to the background, possibly by static, and your drawing/writing would remain until you pulled a plastic slide between the upper film and the background.

no magnets involved ... so maybe it was adapted for use on video cassettes?

    <thinks ... must find a link >

I think it was called a "Printator" or something like that. I wasn't magnetic. It was basically a sheet of thick plastic on top of a wax tablet. When you used the stylus it stuck the plastic to the wax and when you were finished the ruler thingy slid between the plastic sheet and the wax and released it.

/ Edit Printator it was http://www.lesmar-online.co.uk/magic_slate.asp
