looking at the map it's very straight, did the AA just make it up?

Perhaps the map company haven't updated their maps yet so it looks like a very rough approximation from the AA

That line is nowhere near the actual road. Looks like they let the dim intern draw the maps (again).

yeah the road matches that in the latest ordanence Survey atlas of Dublin more closely than the straight line on the AA site.

I used it on Thursday. Nice road and if your heading down the contry its dead handy. Only problem is the road works in Lucan. Really slowed me down.

Also the sign posts on the way back were crap and I missed the turn off and got caught in traffic on the way back from Kilkenny!

Presume these works are just a convenience to the small number of industrial premises on the road. Maybe they're planning on allowing a few more to open.

IIRC someone else posted that the main one there is closing/or loosing staff because of transport difficulties.

I thought the proposed western corridor was to be the new Dublin outer ring road.:D

Signage southbound on the ORR is awful. They consisently have signs for traffic lights instead of roundabouts. When you reach the N7, the junctions are strangely laid out*, but the signage isn't awfully helpful (it would be if you stopped dead and studied it).

*They use these weird looping slip roads. So to get onto the N7 eastbound, you take the west exit off the first roundabout. To get on the N7 westbound, you cross the bridge (as expected), and then take the east exit off the roundabout.

Eh, that is a different road.

Is it a cul-de-sac because of the railway works on a temporary basis?

Yeah it's a different road , just having a look around the SDCC site.

    Ta anyway.

Used to be very handy in the mornings, saved 20 minutes going around Finnstown. If it's to be used as an access route to the new station then happy days. Otherwise it's for one new set of apartments ( no access to finnstown due to a fence which doubles the time to get to the shops if on foot or bike )

maybe it was just because it was halloween but the traffic this evening around the ballyowen roundabout was ridiculous,it was backed up the ballyowen rd and willsbrook road which it never is around that time(18.15hrs),hope this is not due to the ORR and a sign of things to come:(

Spectacular difference for me. Timed myself twice going home from work around 17:30-18:00 last Thursday and today and on both occasions it took 4 minutes to do 4 km. Without breaking the speed limit. Beat that in Dublin traffic!

Down from about 25 minutes to do 7km. Happy days :)

The new link road from Fonthill to ORR makes it a fabulous route from Liffey Valley to N7 (Kingswood).

Re trafflic light signs v. roundabout signs, I know that the existing roundabouts on the Lucan stretch (still under construction, but open to traffic) are being turned into traffic light junctions so that might explain it?

Re signs in general, I see not all of the signs are up yet. Also, ORR had some planning conditions including AFAIR (as far as I recall) the fact that it explicitly must not be signposted as a shortcut route from N7 to N4. It is intended as a local distributor road rather than a major link between the N's.

FYI, ORR & Fonthill Link will also be a main entry point into Adamstown when the Adamstown link road is opened. Thus Adamstown traffic encouraged away from Lucan/Newcastle road.

I drove it again the other night, and it looks like they're putting pedestrian crossings at a lot of the roundabouts, so that's probably what the signs are about. SDCC Still haven't grasped the concept of pedestrian flyovers to avoid traffic congestion I see.

I'm not overly worried as I'd expect very few pedestrians in the area

Drove the road myself at the weekend. It makes a hell of a difference going from the N7 to the N4. No need to go near the redcow roundabout or the N4 roundabout. It should take a lot of traffic off the M50 that would have been doing local trips i.e to the liffey valley cinema.
I did notice that the signs were to close to the roundabouts. They should be further back so plp know what lane to be in.
I am going to make the most of this road now before Adamstown clogs up the road like all the others in the area.

SDCC have trained car drivers to use bus lanes. The new road has 24 hour bus lanes with NO plastic bags over the signs. Expect to be undertaken if indicating left and not yet legally able to enter the bus lane.

Early days yet, the schools are off so traffic is extremely light, proof if needed that school buses could be a far cheaper solution to Dublin's grid lock than building more roads. Dublin Bus turnover is € 200m and you would not need quite that many buses. A crack down on ilegal use of provisionals could also free more road space, if we had a decent public transpot alternative.

The real test will come on Monday.

Very handy all the same outside of rush hour

    Hi Conor

There is a news item at

The associated map is completely misleading

    I attach a corrected map.

    Hi "Victor",

Thank you for bringing that inaccuracy to our attention. We have amended
the route on the website as close as is possible with the mapping
    facilities available to us.

    Kind Regards,

    Nicola Hudson,
    AA Roadwatch.

    Their facilities mustn't be good.

At least the road signage on the ground is appropriate (for a change). SDCC actually seem to be trying to adhere to the TSM these days!

That "bus lane ends" sign seems to obscure the directional signs in front of it, though.

I don't really know why they used "bus lane ends" signs at all-the road markings tell youthe same. Anyway, you're right, maybe they should have just tacked it on to the support post for the ADS itself. It'd be tidier.

I see Adamstown signposted. Is the Adamstown Link Road open then? Or what route (ORR-Newcastle Rd) are they referring to here?

I drove up the road from the N7 to the N4 on Friday. I don't think the Adamstown Rd is open yet.
IIRC it isn't finished on the Adamstown end.

Adamstown link was closed on Saturday.

That's the Nangor Road. Currently it's the most direct way to Adamstown. I believe the Adamstown Link Road will be the R900 btw. These new roads are so long overdue in this area which has been getting by (not!) with medieval cart tracks for far too long.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 42,127 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

The signs to Adamstown continue (coming from the N7) past the junction of the Nangor Rd, right to where the new Adamstown link road will join the ORR.
The Nangor Rd is undergoing an upgrade around the Polly Hops pub where it appears that they are straightning the road (not 100% sure it was necessary to straighten it!).
