the dictation section is rediculous at the start but after much practise you can do it if you think logically.

The exam or the course? We had the course finished before Christmas of third year I think. I hated the dictation but I thought the course was very easy and I didn't even have a strong musical theory background.

I find myself now being able to distinguish and recognise the differences in music, the different traits and themes and styles etc. when I'm listening to all sorts of music. I really learned from it anyway, and got my A so I'm happy.

The main complaint I'd have is regarding the composing. You learn how do to it by the books, which makes it easier but it teaches you more what is categorised as a good sound instead of what is found appealing.

Music....I always hated dictations. I was so glad to get out of that exam and say "Yay I'm never going to have to do them again." Only to step into TY and in one of the first music classes for the teacher to say "Lets do a dictation." I nearly cried.
Recorder annoyed me, but ya get used to it.
Leanr your irish music well and basic keywords!!! They will come up as definitions.
    And so endeth my advice.

Ah Music is very easy to get a pass in, so much of it is just learning things by rote. I just learned off a lot about my pieces without fully understanding some of it and wrote that down. Dis really annoying, but if you can do stuff like recognising different leaps (3rds, 5ths, etc.) it'll get easier. And even if you just get the rhythm that's a lot of marks, remember there is always a dotted crotchet followed by a quaver, you get bonus points if you get that. And then there's your practical, you get loads of marks for that and it doesn't even have to be that high a standard.

    Music is so stupid
Id rather chew my arm off then keep it on for leaving cert.
    Dictation is a joke.
The course NEEDs for be revised.
We should be learning more about song writing and reading diff. types of music instead of learning abou "the peer gynt suite" how is learning about set works and songs going to be of ANY benifit to us???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

I love LC music! : p If there was any more composition in it I'd completely loathe it, but it's grand... if you've got music theory it's easy, just gotta learn about the set pieces which are nice anyway!

Anyway, loads of stuff in loads of subjects may not seem to be of any immediate benefit to you.

What are you on about child... Its the simplest thing for the junior cert.
You just have to master mary had a little lamb on the friggin tin whistle and you get a A slapped on your backside. Its easy!

I hope you do it for leaving cert coz you'll work out quick and fast who dumbed down the J.Cert music course is!!!

how is playing mary had a little lamb on a tin whistle going to get you an A if the practicle is only worth 25%??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 158 ✭✭madgal

    A in the practical smartass.
Its not that hard to study the peer gynt suite. Music isn't just your average dance music ya nuthead, you have to study musical features and no rap isn't one of them either.
Why did you pick it in the first place?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 702 ✭✭✭cork*girl

how can u get an A in the practicle when no way are you allowed get the result of what you got in the practicle. Your just talking out your ass now.
I never said it was hard to study the peer gynt suite. Its ****ing dog easy. What im saying is its stupid and irelevent. I kept it on because im good at it. I just think the course it stupid.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 158 ✭✭madgal

    Its spelt practical love.

In your practical they grade you according to your performance. I mean a 25% is like an F so they're hardly going to give you an F for your performance.
Your marked by grade in your practical so if you get an A in your performance and a D in your written they counter balance and you get a high C or a low B.

So before you jump to conclusions sunshine, think about it.
And I wasn't referring to you about the Peer Gynt Suite I was talking to one of the other members who posted up a bit.

Yes I agree the course is 'stupid'. Its dumbed down for children who have no knowledge of music, and lets just say the leaving certs the same.

    Not a third year actually.
If you've got a problem with third years in general though, I would advise staying away from this board.

Dictations are there pretty much to train your ear primarily and so that you can write music out. The course may be easy but I learned a lot from it and it covers much of what you'd cover in college (except at a much lower standard, of course.) I don't think the course is easy, I just think music is in general easy, the course could be at a higher standard (grade 5 or 6 in the RIAM maybe, anyone know what grade it is now?) but it covers the basics and covers them well.

And the reason why it's important to learn about the Peer Gynt suite is because it's a musical work and you should learn about diferent contrasting kinds of them to broaden your musical knowledge. Your understanding of that piece will be relevant to your understanding of other pieces (regarding mood themes etc. created by the music, technical stuff like cadences too) as you'll learn to spot these things. Studying pieces is an integral part of music, if we didn't study other works it'd be like doing english without studying anyone else's poems or novels or plays. Think that's a good idea?

    Why isn't she banned already?

So dearest, do you give your opinion because you think it's wrong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

She has been warned on this thread to ease up a bit, she's not banned because you are provoking her, if you stop patronising her and treat her like a normal person instead of a silly little third year who's ever-so-beneath you you both might be able to talk to eachother a little more civilly.

I never thought of it that way.
I shall bow and praise you and beg you to forgive me if you like.

Did anyone else play snare drum for their practical site reading?

Shamelessly committing a bit of thread necromancy here. ;)

Does anyone know (roughly) how long it takes for the listening section of the paper? The composition section is grand because the time taken is entirely dependant on the individual, but I'd like to know how long the other half of the thing takes since it's dictated by a CD.

The sound file for 2006 is on the SEC site - you could take a listen and see roughly how long it is.

lol, when i did the JC 2 years ago my teacher came in stoned for about half the classes (there were hotrocks on his trousers) and basically tought us nothing and i still managed 2 get a B. If u play an instrument outside of school and are any good at it, the least you should get is a B. Dont fret over the results its and easily marked paper in my opinion
