Strange icons

    Hi

i booted up the PC this evening to find that the icons on the desktop had changed to a strange colour\ tranparency. I shutdown as normal yesterday evening and had no errors on shutdown just a patch for .net 2.0 installing but didn't give any errors on boot up either

I have attached a screenshot of what they look like. First thought was graphics driver so re-installed that and rebooted no joy issue was still there, then checked screen settings but they all looked normal. then when going to the c: drive i noticed that the dvd drive icon had the same issue but the disk drive icons were all ok.

i have also included the screenshot of the display settings. I had a look in the event viewer and could see no real errors in that either the only one i could see is
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Disk
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 11
    Date: 27/10/2006
    Time: 17:46:19
    User: N/A
    Computer: DESKTOP
    Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D.

but i dont think that could cause this

Next i ran a full anti virus scan no joy there all clean ( good old AVG :) ) then a spybot search and a adware search both turned up a few results but nothing that i hadn't seen before. BTW i also checked the cables from monitor to card and that is ok and graphics in everything else seems ok! just seems to be the icons even tried re-creating them but they also come up the same

I am now running out of idea's as to what could have caused this and how to fix it.. anybody care to give me some inspiration?

I think this is a driver issue tbh.

Do you have system restor enabled ? if so give it a try. Just restore to a date when you know everything was fine.

You can also try downloading drivercleaner, And use this to remove all nvidia drivers ( video/wdm ) and then boot into safe mode and do the same. then boot windows normally and install the drivers.

I was thinking that you had 16bit colour depth on but you are obviously on 32bit as per your pics.

Let us know how ya get on

    Hi anti

Thanks for the help. indeed it was a driver error that caused the issue and that piece of software for cleaning the driver done the trick and then I re-installed the latest driver from nVidea which seems to have fully sorted the trick.

    Regards
    Tommy
