does anyone know of any good software for backing up a server to and external harddrive. so i could do a backup every week or so and it won't copy everything again just files that have been changed or new files.

    MSBACKUP, Norton Ghost, et al.
    What size disks?
    What OS?
And so on and so forth...

    thanx i'll check them out.
i'd be backing up about 40gb onto a 250gb external harddrive.

I take it you didn't get any backup software with the external hard drive, just most of them I have come across have something bundled with it. Anyway I use the Backup tool in System Tools in Windows XP.

Robocopy from the Windows Server Resource Kit

I find it very handy for this kind of backup. Just write a batch script to perform the backup with the relevant switches. /MIR mirrors an entire directory tree - it both copies new/changed files and removes deleted files from the target. You can then use the built in Windows task scheduler to have it run once a day/week/month.

ntbackup has always worked for me.

Have you looked at the backup tool built into XP?

Start it and there is a piece of text that says advanced mode. Click it and you get proper options. Don't know anything about it as I've never used it but it might be worth a go.

Incremental backups are generally headache-city as you might have to work your way through half-a-dozen backup sets to get back an original file.

Keep it simple, back up everything afresh using NTBACKUP. Storage is cheap these days.
