Can someone recommend a decent 17" and 19" monitor for me? I will be using it for playing games. I don't want to break the budget on the monitor though. Thanks for the advice.

I got a Dell P991 for a very budget friendly price of €0 last year. It was being thrown out from the library in UL (luckily it wasn't left outside). 6 years old now, starting to take a bit longer to warm up, but the picture's great when it has, and can do 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz quite comfortably for gaming (a bit too blurry for my liking for desktop use though - I put it down to 1280x1024).

Only other downsides besides warming up is having to calibrate the convergance as the defaults are blurry as shyte (and you can never get it perfect across the screen :( ), and the *ahem* fact it weighs 27kg. :D

If you look hard enough you'll find loads of similar 19" CRTs that no one wants - Sony Trinitron tubes like this were also found in some other Dell and IBM monitors. Mitsubishi/NEC "Diamondtron" tubes are also similarly excellent.

    How much is a
vga-dvi convertor and where can I get one? Is there a similar monitor around that has the dvi slot? Also, zilog_jones, surely I would be better getting an LCD monitor?

If you want poor brightness and contrast, crap colour (most cheaper LCDs only do 6 bits per pixel, and just flicker to get colours inbetween), ghosting (I know they've improved a lot but I'm still not impressed), and the inability to do more than one resolution without serious compromises, then go ahead ;)

You sound thoroughly unconvinced about LCDs! So should I save some money and opt for a 19" CRT instead? I'll be using it for games.

Dell are bringing out a cheaper stripped down version of their 2007WFP 20" widescreen monitor for about €280. It's only VGA/DVi, it doesn't have the component inputs of it's big brother. Regardless for this price it's a great deal..monitor used is a samsung rated 8ms and I think it's 6bit instead of 8bit not that you'll notice the difference..
I have the 2007WFP and it's fantastic for gaming..can't go wrong.

Its simple LCD's and Plasma's will never and I mean Never have the clarity of Your good old bog standard Cathode Ray Tube.

Buy a LCD If you have space issues otherwise stick with the 19" CRT
