South Park spoofs Irwin (too soon?)[Contains Spoilers]

The makers of South Park have caused more controversy by lampooning the death of Steve Irwin.

The latest episode shows an animated Irwin in Hell with a stingray poking out of his bleeding chest.

Irwin, 44, died in September after he was impaled by a stingray's barb while snorkelling off Australia.

The South Park episode called Hell On Earth 2006, broadcast in the US this week, features Satan hosting a Halloween fancy dress party.

Hundreds of dead celebrities are invited, including rapper Notorious B.I.G., Princess Diana and Hitler.

At the party Satan receives complaints from his guests that someone is inappropriately dressed up as Irwin.

Satan confronts Irwin but the Aussie evironmentalist protests it is really him, not a guest in a costume.

British broadcasting watchdog Mediawatch condemned the episode as "grossly insensitive."

Its director, John Beyer, said: "I think this is in bad taste. Steve Irwin's family are still grieving."

But a South Park spokesman said: "It has offended people in the past and probably will again. Regular watchers would not be shocked."

Tis South Park after all

South Park is all about current events and taking the piss out of them. No change here.

You have to expect it from South Park. The Episode was bloody great too. At least in the episode Satan thought Irwin was dressed as Irwin at a fancy dress sweet 16 party (for Satan), and was told that some people at the party were offended by the outfit as they thought it was too soon :)

    Brilliant!

If you're going to talk about details in the episode, use the spoiler tags to be fair to those who haven't seen it.

Just watched it myself, great episode really. Though I was a big fan of Irwin, it was to be expected of South Park and it wasn't anything too shocking tbh. It'd be a bit hypocrital for Iwin fans to sit here and rant about South Park doing it, while sitting back and laughing while they joke about people others admire.
All in all, another great one from South Park.

The joke was that Matt and Trey anticipated that something about Irwin was expected from them, and then gave us a joke about how it's "too soon, too soon". Which is masterful stuff on their part, not even slightly "lampooning" anyone's death. Idiot reactionary article and idiot reactionary Mediawatch.

An average ep. The Irwin content lasts only about 10 seconds so it's no big deal. I liked the priests 'pets' idea and totally loved the 3 stooges stuff. :) Those guys definetly deserve a full ep some time in the future.

Even funnier is how all the focus is on Steve Irwin. There were priests and bishops with naked children on leashes in this episode!! Not a word has been said about that. That to me is hilarious. Well done Matt and Trey.

Yeah - and nobody mentioned the fact that Princess Diana is in hell!.....because it was a few years ago - that was the whole point of the Irwin joke - that something like Diana joke is okay now because some time has passed since her death, and it's quite hypocritical how people say the Irwin joke isn't acceptable, just because it wasn't that long ago! What's the difference? How is slagging a dead Diana okay, but slagging a dead Steve Irwin isn't (not that they even "slagged" Irwin!)? The answer is in the joke: because it's "too soon" - and the hypocritical media & critics took the bait...

Wow, that entire episode failed to shock me in the least. What does that mean?!

Saw it over the weekend and gotta say it was pretty funny. Wasn't offended by anthing in it.

Yeah, that's gas how they had Diana in hell and nobody lifted an eye brow about it, because obviously enough time has passed to find it funny.. Good point!

When Cartman was imitating him it was way funnier, "I'm gonna jam my thumb up its butthole!" :D

It didn't really shock me at all, I just loved the Super Sweet Sixteen parody, a show that should die a swift and horrible death along with MTV.

They had Gandhi and that actor guy in hell too, I think that was a reference to the SP movie, where they also appeared in hell!

Come on!!! Steve Irwin would have loved that :D

And i dont think they did anything offensive about it? he was just standing there? if they took the p*ss outta him, thats one thing, but they didnt. They had a calm reasonble conversation with him?

    i dunno. people, eh?
