4000+ worth 40 Euro more than 3700+

I'd personally go for the 3700 and OC the nuts off it. Should easily exceed 4000 speeds on stock cooling...and much more with a good HSF such as the Arctic Colling Freezer Pro.

agreed, spend the 40€ saved on a good hsf. But as soon as you get the cpu check the stepping of it, Its a series of numbers and letters on the top of the cpu. Check it online and see what others are getting. You will either get a good one or a bad one. But id be almost 100% that you will get well over 4000+ speeds.

I had the 3000+ chip my self and clocked it to about 2460mhz. Then i upgraded to the 3700+ chip and clocked it to about the same speed. But found the chip to be a lot better then the old 3000+. The extra cash made a difference.

If you can stretch your budget a little get yourself a dual core opteron
they are down to half price at Scan.uk even the single cores are great value
    and great fun to overclock.

I would assume that the opteron would be far superior than a single core 4000+ for gaming. Am I correct?

If this is the case it's noteworthy that komptett are offering a 4000+ for about €130 whereas Scan.uk are selling an Opteron 64 146, 2.0GHz for about €90.

Also, can anyone tell me why an Opteron 64 144 (939), 1.8GHz is slightly more expensive, £60.97, than an Opteron 64 146, 2.0GHz, £59.93?

I wouldn't bother with either, you will only get minimal performance gains over an overclocked 3000+.
Your CPU is hardy worth anything at the moment so just clock it as high as you can.
Otherwise upgrade to a dual core.

I was going to put in some quotes from other posters but I agree with everything that has already been said:

Its not worth your while upgrading from 3000+ to 3700+. Agreed.

Buy a cheaper CPU and use the extra cash to invest in a good HSF. Agreed (vapochill micro, best bang for buck... or *drool* Tuniq Tower)

Move over to dual core instead, namely dual core Opterons. Ageed, I have the 165 which is known to be your best price/OC value. Most steppings will give you around a 50% OC. You'll hit 2.4Ghz at least regardless.

The Opteron is far superior to the 4000+ for gaming. Agreed, but this is not because of the dual cores per se, there are still a lot of games out there with no dual core support, where the Opterons come into their own against the dual core X2's is the 1mb of cache per core (2mb total) which is what will make the difference in gaming, along with their great overclockability.

Now, that being said you can buy them new and take the luck of the draw that you will get a good stepping. Or, like me, you can buy the stepping you want off ebay in the states for cheaper than buying them for new and crossing your fingers. They are going for dirt cheap on newegg as well so if you have a friend/relative in the states, buy one and get them to ship it to you.

Here are some links to find out about steppings. 0610 is the holy grail of 3Ghz+ Opteron 165's, but you'll be hardpushed to get one off ebay for under $260:
