The ear phone jack on the zen is not a normal jack so you should not put normal headphones into it! This is because the Zen uses the headphones as an antenna for the radio.

As for Ipod over Zen. I've compared the two in work.
Ipod = Better sound. Sexy looking.
Zen = Better Video, not locked into Apple formats (can play number of formats).

I had an iPod Video. Was happy with it until I left it in my jacket which I washed in the washing machine!

It survived that only to be nicked by American security when I checked my bags with it in it. It was kind of dodgy anyway.

If you are not afraid of messing about with firmware that can be easily fixed.

the screen on the zen vision m is awsome, for ease of use zen wins hands down plays all my xvid and divx avi files fine, and u dont need to use the bundled software (media source) its rubbish, u can sync with media player and other programs or use drag and drop method, one thing ill say that is only a minor annoyance to me is its a bitch to get album art to work

Other thing i have with mine and many others have the same is after every 30 or so tracks the song with get a distorted popping sound , no big deal realy hitting back or next fixes it. but (and im open to correction ) i think the last firmware fixed that.

As said apple is the better player in terms of sound but the zen vision m sounds almost has sweet.

If it wasnt for having to use i tunes and some of the other restriction on the ipod id have got one, i know i could work around / hack it but why should i .

    .

Not true at all !!!!!!!! it does use for headphones for radio reception but its the thickness of the plastic covering on the headphone cable that is important ive use sony and philips ear bubs on it and with the sony radio receptio n was very bad due to thick coating on the cable, the reason the port is different is because it doubles as a port for the wired remote.
