Options if chimney removed throughout house

Removing the chimney breast up through the house is an option available to us to create a potential open plan space downstairs. The room would be quite large and we are concerned about not having a focal point such as a gas fire, and also think it is something we would like to have (though want the open plan space too :0) Someone mentioned to us that you can add some? type of ordinary or gas fire without a chimney breast/flue in place but running whatever piping is required above the fire and to the outside.

Does this sound right to anyone, anyone any experience of this type of thing, or web links to different options?

    Thanks for any info
    :)

Just googled (should have doen that first :D ) and see there are flueless gas fires and that electric fires are another option.

Anyone know any Irish sites good for info/pics on flueless options?
