I spent two days in Warsaw while inter-railing about 7 years ago. The old town square area is lovely. Very quaint, lots of restaurants and bars. I can't recommend any in particular however.

We arrived by train very early in the morning. Secured our accommodation and were getting a tram into the city from the train station. We bought our tickets and boarded the tram. We couldn't find the stamp for the tickets, to validate them on the journey. I was holding them in my hands, asking people, (none of whom had even pigeon English) where the validation, stamp thingy was when a ticket inspector asked to see my ticket. I tried to explain that we’d only just boarded and were trying to work the tickets out, but we threw us off the tram and fined us.

One of his colleagues had a bit of English and finally agreed to just give us one fine, which if memory serves was crazy expensive, about £50 punt. We were probably completely scammed but the guy kept us in the middle of the road at a tram stop and was screaming at us in Polish. So we paid up, and they took my passport details.

That put a dampner on the few days foir us as we were on a very tight budget, plus the accommodation was in a ****ty area. However if you go more prepared and researched then we were it’s probably a nicer place then we say.

It’s still quite depressed from the war, or at least it was when we were there. There is massive amount of building being done and the place just looks run down. The war museum on the old town square is great. Really helps you understand just how much the war devastated the city

From talking to other people who’ve been I’ve gathered that we may not have seen the best the city had to offer. Hope you have a good time.
