New MTT trend?

I've recently started playing more MTT's recently mainly on Stars. I'm starting to notice a bizarre trend by players which keeps occuring.

Tight players are limping in MP after two limpers with hands like AK and AQ and they call any push or raise behind them.

I had the unfortunate pleasure of experiencing this when i pushed on the button with AJ with around 15 bbs after 5 limpers and this is where blinds were huge. I couldnt put any of them on a monster as i only seen them raise with pairs. MP had AQ, CO had AKs

It wasnt just an isolatd incident which is why i'm posting. It happened in another game too. So i decided to follow suit and limped with AJ or AT in MP after previous limpers and this seemed to be the right move at this particular table because at this stage it was almost impossible to tell what a previous limper had so by limping i could get in cheap and out cheap if i missed. I've never done this before.

Surely limping with unmade hands like this is -EV?

What stack sizes are we talking here? Sometimes if I've a medium stack and there are small-stacks at the table who I believe to be push-happy, I'll limp with these sort of hands, hoping they push behind me. Not all the time, but sometimes it 'feels' right.

What sort of buy-ins are we talking about here?

This was a $20 FO with deep stacks. The blinds were 400-800 at this stage. Both players had roughly 20-25bbs.

its most likely exactly as lenny said then... both players quite comfortable.... question is, how many shortstacks were behind them??
Often at this stage of a tourney you'll get shorties raising all in - or putting in most of their stack in - with mediocre hands like A9, KQ etc. limping with a close to premium hand can be very advantageous in these situations.
Also gives the shorties more incentive to push all in as there's more chips in the middle to steal.
