    Hi,

I've heard details of a club that will be opening, but am a bit apprehensive! Here are as much of the details that I can give, can you please voice your opinions? These details are likely to change, I don't think anything has been set in concrete.

    - Opening as a club in someones house
    - A lot of money has been spent on chips / tables / decor
    - It costs €250 to join for 1 year
    - It will be limited to 50 members
    - There will be a rake on the night
    - Beer will be exchanged for chips at the price of €2.50 per bottle
    - Won't necessarily be open every night

What do you guys think of this setup?
What about from a legal aspect?
What about from a value aspect?

The one plus for this club is that it will be a handy place for locals to go, as there is no other place in this town. I think the €250 might get you into a satalite for a ticket to the WSOP, but that's about it

This is the dumbest thing I've ever read.

lol @ having 50 randomers walking around your house.

BTW where is this going to be located???

Wow. The first card club in Ireland which actually is a genuine private members club. Ironic, considering the law is about to be changed.

If this is serious, then legalities are sure to be a big issue.

No it's not a joke. A friend of mine (not computer Savvy) has been asked if he would like to join the club, and he's looking for opinions on it all.

I told him that there was a poker forum on boards, and that he would be able to reach the masses from there.

He doesn't know if he should join or not because
    1) It might be deemed illegal
    2) 250 Entrance fee is shocking seeing as clubs everywhere else are free

The only reason he is considering it is because it's practically on his doorstep.

Is it owned by the Westies or some other gangsters?

It is for real thats why he wanted the opions of people that know. He said he was mainly interested because it was in his home town, and it would be great if he didn't have to travel 2 hours every day, just to get to the casino.

He doesn't think it owned by a gangster or anything! Just someone trying to capitalize on the poker boom.

thanks for you comments so far

Well if this is true there either stupid for letting any randomer into their house, or there bandits, they can easily collude, fix games, have chips in their pockets etc

Sounds like he's been watching far too much Futurama.

He doesn't want to disclose the location at the moment, for fear of his life!

This club is practically on my doorstep. My brother took a trip down there last Friday night. The game was a 20 Eur MTT with a 5 Eur reg.He came back saying that the decor was excellent with great tables, great plasma screens etc.

The reason why this whole idea sounds insane to most people is because most of you have access to places where "proper" poker is played. Around here it is all crapshoot pub games. This new club attracts better quality of players because they're fed up with the luckbox that is pub poker.

There is no casino near the vicinity.

I seriously question the legality of such a place and thus will not be attending.I can see it being raided and shut down and thus have tried warning my brother not to invest. The 250 membership is a disgrace also. Unfortunately my brother sees this place as his new haven as do most of the local players who want to play proper structured poker.

Didn't we establish that the likes of the Fitz and SE are no more legal than something like this? That they have no gambling licence and are just set up as a members club. This sounds no different whatsoever. The SE charges for membership too.

Personally if I were setting up a club I would make money from rake and table games. I don't know if people are going to part with €250 in a lump to something that could close down the next week. But if it works it works.

Charging for alcohol is defo illegal though.

I would be very careful joining a place like this. I think its more likely to get shut down for selling beer rather than playing poker . I presume that dont have a license to sell beer. If any local guards or publicans hear about this , you can be sure it wont last long. I would be also very worried about people cheating.

I wouldn't join anyways, no matter how convenient. Part of the reason is the 250, part of the reason is that with only 50 members max you are never sure that there will be a game on. Doesn't sound even semi legal either. If your friend is adamant that he wants to join, then get him to ask the owners have they cleared this with the law, especially the bit about selling beer for chips. They might think this is a way to get around the alcohol licence but I doubt this sort of 'token exchange' is legal either. If the guy running this says he has not cleared it but it is ok anyways then either run a mile or make enquiries to the guards himself.

Fifty members theoretically all playing the same night!
    Man, that's one big house.

I don't see anything wrong with playing somewhere like this, I'm sure it's not legal but there are illegal poker games all over the world.

    Do they take direct debits...?
