Overseas voting?

    Hey guys,

I've just been informed that it is impossible for an Irish citizen to vote when they are residing overseas (except for embassy diplomats, gardai and UN workers).

Is this constitutional? How come the Irish Government doesn't implement an overseas voting procedure?

Not looking for legal advice but just an inquiry into why the system is the way it is...

Number of Irish citizens in Ireland roughly 4 million
Number of potential irish citizens resident around the world, over 40 million

40 Million would be a conserative estimate too.

I'm not a potential, I am an Irish citizen. Why are actual citizens prevented from voting?

It's a very good question Thirdfox. I'm also in the same boat as you. I'm an Irish citizen that's been living in Spain for the last year. I don't have any right to vote in Spain and I don't have any right to vote in Ireland. Hardly seems fair does it?

These potentials are either citizens or they are not.

Can you imagine the dirty tricks that would ensue if say the Irish in America were allowed to vote in dail elections?

Also allowing overseas citizens to vote could impact the length of time it takes to finailse a result. We just waiting for the antartic irish vote to come in! :)

im the opposite: American in Ireland.

it does seem unconstitutional, but consider the imbalance there: not to mention you may want to look into how Irish passports are given out?

Even for myself, there should be some kind of residency requirement: like 2 years in your home country after being registered to vote, or something...??
