Is PP very secure. Would I be correct to say that if I pay a website/company through PPal my credit card details only go to Pay Pal and they pay the company. The company dont get to see my card details at all, is this correct ?

I've used it a number of times, even outside eBay transactions and had no issues. I would say you are correct, its likely the company just uses the Paypal payment system for their shop.

As long as the site is legit (you might get some opinions to find if any boardsies have used it, etc) then there should be no issues, thats my thinking on it.

I'd only use Paypal using a credit card with a low credit limit (or a one that offers a one time use card number). And then if I had no choice and needed it for some life or death purchase.

It is a high profile target on the internet, that stores your user data ad infinitum, based in a country with no data protection laws to speak of.
I suspect that Paypal is a "must hack" target, for many of those in the hacking business.

I have a PayPal account which I have used to purchase items with on eBay. Can I just give my e-mail address to someone in order to receive money from them or do I need to set up some special service on my PayPal account?

    TIA :)

Yes, all you need to do is provide your e-mail address to the person from whom you wish to receive money. Obviously the e-mail address is the one you use to log into paypal.

There is a limit on the amount of money you can receive every month and you will be charged a fee for withdrawing any funds received to an external bank account.

I've been using paypal myself for about a year mainly on ebay. It's a lot safer than providing your credit card details to some unknown website (even if the website has a legitimate security certificate).

The main thing is to ensure that you use a strong password for your paypal account (I'd recommend at least 8 characters with a mixture of numbers letters and other characters such as @ or $). Don't use dictionary words or obvious things such as name of pet etc.

Also be aware of phishing e-mails which will attempt to get you to enter your paypal login details so the person can access your account.

Nothing you do online is 100% secure so if you're still unsure just use a single use virtual credit card such as that provided by Permanent TSB

    3V vouchers

It's definitely an alternative but the fees are pretty steep. You top up the virtual card by buying vouchers (like mobile phone top-ups) at certain outlets. However, you'll find that you'll end up with small amounts of credit after each use which will cost you more than its worth to redeem.
