Dont keep rats anymore - SORRY

If the rat is to be a pet you need more than 1 - rats are social animals & need to be with other rats perferably a sibling.

hey, good news i found out from thomas from mc elheron reptiles that he's breeding them again and will be ready in about 2-3 weeks so ive booked two. My last rat that i bought years ago was one of thomas's babys and it was unbelievable. Im not a fan of the farmed type of rats, i like to know what im getting. So I'd highly recommend waiting the few weeks to get one of these and the lads in there always look after me when im getting other stuff so going to get a good deal on the cage and everything else. Can't wait!

Rats are deadly..Id love one. Let us know how you get on!

Are they harder to keep happy than say a gerbil?I have one gerbil(her partner died) and shes deadly..quiet little thing, and friendlier than hamsters.

Hamsters are terrible pets but there good at marketing haha gerbils are like hamsters on speed but rats really are great pets, so smart and on average they clean themselves 7-8 times a day. My last rat used to run up my leg onto my shoulder and just sit there for ages, and was completely house trained even though i didnt do much training at all. So im not expecting this one to be so good but wouldn't complain if i was that lucky again :)

I'll put up a pic when i get mine

Rats in my opinion are one of the best rodents! They tame down very well love to be cuddled if handled often. On the down side they are rather smelly but if they are cleaned weekly of more often this is not a problem. Rats need to be kept in pairs or small groups - I personally prefer male ratties as they are so much more laid back than the gals.

rats do need a large cage than gerbils & wire rather than a tank but they are no harder to look after - like gerbils they are active during the day & early evening rather than being nocturnal like hamsters.

You might think about getting her a new partner (pref another female), gerbils are extremely social animals and live in colonies. A single gerbil may seem "quiet" but may in fact be extremely lonely and sad.

A healthy and content gerbil should be VERY active, and VERY alert, and constantly re-arranging the cage. :)

Yep shes always like that..she has plastic house yoke hanging out of the bars, has half of that chewed away, im always taking out bits of plastic, a wooden bridge she drags around with her, and i got her a new straw nest just now, shes havin great craic. When I said quiet , I meant that shes friendly, doesnt bite you or run off, shes good at letting me pick her up. I was going to get her a new friend, but when Chips dies, that one will be alone, then il have to get her another one..etc etc, will keep going forever! Not that I dont want em, but while Im living at home, im not allowed anymore. I dont see why...its not like theyre running around the house, theres still only one cage..

Anyway im sounding like a teenager again..

SO for rats, what kind of cage is the best, I presume theyd need a fairly large wire one?

    Just a thought,
If you are not allowed another gerbil. are you sure you will be allowed a rat?
They do make great pets, BUT they are a lot more "involved" then a gerbil, need a LOT more interaction, and no matter what anyone says, even cleaned out daily, rat pee does smell rather a lot more than other rodents.
