Ireland is set for some very unsettled weather over the coming days. Tomorrow a deep depression with slip from the Bay of Biscay up over Ireland and into Scotland, as it does so it will deepen into a tight depression.

Rainfall is set to be very very high over Ireland during Wednesday evening.

Especially in the east, falls of upto 40mm are possible.
With gusty easterly winds of 30mph gusting 50mph in the east, it will be a rather unpleasent afternoon.

But as the depressin pushes northeast it will deepen

with strong gusty winds across the Island on Thursday and potentially quite severe winds during Thursday afternoon across Eastern NI and eastern areas.

The depression will then move into Britain with very strong winds on Britains eastern coasts.

Overall a very unsettled few days with strong winds and lots of heavy rain.

Looks like Autumn is finally upon us.
Chilly temps so far this week and the more seasonal strong winds might arrive come late Wedensday.
The track of this depression will be interesting enough.

Rain is expected to become heavier as the days moves on.With the heaviest rain around the core of the Low pressure.which is forecast to move right up over the East later this afternoon evening.

Easterly winds have started to pick up and will gradually back to the NW as the evening goes on remaining strong.

Just had a look at met.ie radar, its showing something you don't often see, virtually all of the island of Ireland covered in a unbroken sheet of rain. Just parts of NW Mayo and Donegal left dry and that wont last much longer.

Snap! Just had a look at it myself - I've never seen it so complete over Ireland...

46.5mm now and still coming down

The firebrigade is down at the Arklow by pass roundabots trying in vain to pump away the water. That road is blocked as is the wheely pump main road in from the Dublin side of the town.
Not to mention the bottom end of the town now under feet of water.

Dick Roche is going to get some eating over this,as he's been humming and hawing over a flood plan for the town for ages.

The rainfall animation on avbrief is amazing - while the main rainbelt is moving northwards the low centre can be seen clearly moving into cork and kerry and the bands start wrapping around.

Think the midlands and northern ireland are going to fare particularily badly out of this.

Unfortunately looks like your area is going to continue to get pounded by heavy showers/longer spells of rain for a few hours yet even if there is a tempory lull soon.

Hope you are not one of the unfortunates living in a house being flooded there :(

Again Dublin well here anyway has escaped the flooding.
Yes longfield the track of the low is more west than forecasted, meaning where you said will see more rain than originally forecasted.

Severe flooding on the farm here, the worst I've seen since hurricane charlie and its worse I think.
The stream has burst its bank at the side of the farm and rose 4 feet above the bank flooding the water pump house beside it so I've no running water now :(
Both roads out of Arklow onto the N11 are closed.

Latest radar looks like this beastie is moving in a more northerly direction than before- hopefully places like Waterford and Arklow wont see much more further rainfall in the short term thankfully.

Add time +1 Hour for summer time (ending this weekend btw)

As the centre of the low has moved over Cork and moving in a Belfast direction the the winds are veering from an east direction to south before again veering to the NW,thats bad for low lying areas on the south coast that has have floods today.

Original tack of this system was meant to take it up the Irish sea with winds backing to the NW instead of veering NW.

The going to be very mild in the south as the low moves away. Looks like Scotland is going to get it in the neck tomorrow.

    Mike.

I see the 9 o clock news were live in Arklow.
That flooded roundabout at the kish is beside me,the fire brigade and Gardaí are still there,I can see the flashing blue lights from here.
It's still under 2ft of water though the rain has now thankfully stopped.

    48mm total since 9am

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭Snowbie

    Nearly two inches,thats something else.
Arklow is flooded a few times alright this year.
With the sheer amount of rain that fell in Arklow anywhere will be flooded but,Is Arklow in some sort of "New Orleans bowl" or is the drainage that bad/blocked down there?.

The bottom of the town is actually below sea level,so yes I'd say theres a bit of a fish bowl effect there.
That said this is the worst flooding in Arklow since Charlie a lot of people have been saying and I'd agree.
By the way I still havent had time to service my aws so I reckon it was considerably under reporting the rain.It may well have been closer to 2 and a half inches.
My brother told me he was in town at 4pm and the man holes at the top of the street on the higher ground were lifted off, they couldnt cope with the flow.

Beside that roundabout that was on the news,a farmer had to get his cows in this evening in 4 feet of water, some of the cows barely had their necks above the water.
The problem there was the sheer volume of water running off the fields.

    Thats something else.
If had`nt of serviced my AWS two weeks ago i thought it would have been under-reporting too,but the rain was not at all heavy here just persistent.

Watch out for those spiders, they seem to like to nest in the tipping bucket on both sides.Must have been getting inaccurate readings on rain i think since March when i last serviced it.
