    The Guardian Website
My God, what a legend, this is a horrible story. I hope he stays off the drink this time, otherwise he is just another George Best waiting to happen.

Some shocking stuff in there about suicide attempts, the lot.

I have to get that book of his.

He was talking to Ken Urley on Newstalk the other night. I think he'd make an excellent regular TV pundit, very articulate and well spoken. It would be great to see him on The Premiership every week.

He was to be employed by the BBC at the last World Cup, but he went on a bender the night before his first scheduled appearance, and they dropped him.

I don't think anyone would touch him at the moment, but if he stays dry for any considerable length of time then he might get a look in somewhere.

I hope he does, he seems a really nice man.

Yeah screw the BBC and their high standards. RTE is where it's at, him and Dunphy could come in drunk or hungover together.

Brilliantly written article. I never really had any heros growing up, but he was the closest thing i had to one. A sad tale, indeed.

Just finished reading his book last week. It's well worth the read, never realised just how tough he'd had it.

Amazing footballer -- midfield or at the back -- along with Roy Keane simply the best to play for Ireland -- 2 brilliant world cups , he was the best Irish player for me in both world cups he played in -- now he is peniless -- and the current rubbish who play for Ireland are loaded -- i know he drank it away -- but still a 100 % legend .

heard the interview on newstalk, was shocking to listen to it.the book is a must read, lets hope he turns a corner now and earns the sort of living that a man with his talent deserves.

For anyone interested, he'll be at the opening of Borders bookstore in the West End Retail Park in Blanchardstown this Friday, I think... although the site says Saturday 12pm - 2pm.

Legend of a player and legend of a bookshop.

I missed the interview. I'm glad he's now going to make something out of his story instead of the press, for a change. As much as he was loved, we probably still didn't realise what we had till we ended up with this crowd of donkeys. Come on McShane. :)
