[Article] Dublin Airport under 'stress and strain'

Might be of some interest and as we all know, Dub airport needs some attention and fairly soon.
    from rte.ie
The chief executive of IDA Ireland, Sean Dorgan, has said problems at Dublin Airport have to be addressed if Ireland is to continue attracting international investment.

Speaking at a conference on airport development in Dublin, Mr Dorgan said the current facilities at Dublin Airport are under stress and strain.
He said it does not impress international business visitors when they arrive off a flight from the US at 5.30am to have to queue for a significant time at Passport Control.

Mr Dorgan said the first impressions of Ireland experienced by people arriving at Dublin Airport are not good because the airport was not designed to cater for the demand it is currently experiencing.
Mr Dorgan said this situation now had to be addressed. He added that Dublin Airport needs - and should have - the support of all stake holders so it can progress. He said the airport particularly deserves the support of the airlines which use it.

Meanwhile, the Director of Planning at Fingal County Council described to delegates how the airport would develop over the coming years.
David O'Connor said that this year 20 million passengers would use Dublin Airport, but by 2025 that figure will have risen to 38 million.

A two day conference on airport development is underway in Dublin.

'Dublin airport is the largest airport in the country and the single largest entity in the State', said Councillor Ciaran Byrne of the Fingal Development Board, who is hosting the conference.
'It is of utmost importance for Ireland's continued competitive advantage that we mange and develop this asset in a way that can cope and grow with the estimated 38 million passengers that are expected to travel through the airport by 2025,' said Councillor Byrne.

'If Dublin Airport is not managed properly we will see serious and long-term repercussions right across Ireland,' he added.

Well to be honest Dublin Airport needs knocking down and bring in the Germans to re build a new one for us. Ever been to Munich ??? Know thats an airport!!! Dublin is a mess.

Having said that so what if Americans land at 530am in Dublin and have to wait for immigration!! When we land over there on a non direct flight we have to que for ages also. We need more fast track kiosks at Dublin airport for EU nationals only and the rest can just join the line like we have to do in their countries.

Good points Dellas. Flew out of Munich last week. What an airport!

As for queues for passport control, I've flown to many countries around the world and have often experienced queues much worse than those in Dublin airport. My guess is this guy had to queue once on his way back from the States and now has his gander up!

I would have thought the things a business traveller might have more concern over is being ripped of by Taxis to leave the airport or the shockingly bad infrastructure of this country!

Funny, anytime I go away, I don't come back and think "it would have been a great trip if only I didn't have to queue for 15 mins to have my passport checked!". For work or pleasure.

Damn right, Munich (probably all of Germany) makes Ireland look like a backwater. Up the Germans!

The sad thing is we could do it and have top of the range stuff in this country but they spend too much time arguing.

Munich is just my favourite and they built the new Athens airport also which is a nice airport too.

Too right. Another article from rte.ie today.

A second terminal at Dublin Airport has been given the go-ahead by planners at Fingal County Council.

The new terminal will cater for 15 million passengers and will cost €395m.
Dublin Airport Authority says the new terminal will be operational in three years.

28 individuals and companies had objected to the proposal during the planning process, including Ryanair who wanted the terminal to be built privately.
Fingal County Council has attached 43 conditions to the planning permission.
