[FONT=Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif]Almost €1 million which had been left lying in dormant bank accounts has been allocated to groups working to tackle Ireland's high suicide rates.
They go on and on about saving. And then they turn around and steal someone's rainy day fund. F**king spa's, tbh.

I don't think you understand what a dormant account is.

If an account has been completely inactive for more than 15 years and there is no possible way for the bank to contact the account holder then the state can claim the money and they put towards worthy causes... it's better than it just sitting there for all eternity making money for the banks.

Back in 2002, they estimated €173m in such accounts.
Seems a pityful amount to give for something thats the biggest cause of fatalities in young males in this country.

There are a lot of cases where a person dies and has no record of their account to deal with the money afterwards. The money is transferred to the government's Dormant Accounts Fund on a set date every year if no transaction of any kind has taken place for fifteen years.

The important thing to remember is that the owner of the account or their next of kin can still claim the money from the Dormant Accounts Fund at any stage afterwards by providing sufficient proof.

It's not like it happened to them by accident.

You can actually get the money back anyway, so its not stealing.

Funny how when the government actually manage to do something positive they still manage to get slated.

Neither are many of the smoking-related diseases, alcohol-related diseases, or obesity-related diseases that my taxes pay for. ...

OP: As pointed out above, read up on the term dormant account. Hell, for all we know it could have been stolen money gone unclaimed. I can play the speculating-through-my-arse game too. \o/

In fairness if someone hasnt AFTER 15 years claimed savings then they deserve to have it donated towards good causes. OP, how can you argue against the stupidity of these people???

On a side topic kinda (Just for your info folks :) ) an account goes dormant after 3 yrs of unactivity but the gov must wait a further 12 before they can take the money by law. So therefore if you has a savings account sitting idle for 3 yrs gaining interest it could go dormant unless you deposit / withdraw from it

Oh yes... and the dormant account fund actually pays my wages. You can't get much more worthy than that.

I'm sitting here right now drinking beer and eating a block of cheddar that were paid for from money that came from a Dormant Account. So lets all give a big cheer for the dormant accounts.

Might be worth reading a little more into something before making daft remarks on it.
