I've just registered as a seller on ebay and I just want to know how do Irish sellers get the price of postage on their items do they weight each and every item or is their a website to find out how much P&P you should charge. Also any tips on selling would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.:D

This is where you should start to look. There might actually be a calculator on the An Post website. I used to weigh each item and then give the seller the option of regular airmail or whatever other method An Post had (express or whatever it is now).

Graham, you really should try to read some of the information on the ebay site. All the instructions and information you need is there.
I think what you can get on boards.ie is some tips.
I mean did you just get out of bed or something ;)

There is a calculator on the An Post website http://www.anpost.ie/AnPost
You can also get a booklet from your local PO called Guide to Postal Rates which is extremely well laid out and handier to use than having to check the website. The only other thing you need then is a scales - a small electronic one is best. Best of luck with the selling!

do they weight each and every item
Answer is yes its best to weigh each item before you list it, with packaging. (Obviously if you sell the same item regularly you wouldn't need to do it each time).

Its too late when you've sold the item and you realise the packaging is going to take it into the next price bracket. Bang goes your profit on small cost items anyway. I've had that happen once and I've learned not to guess the weight.

I weight items on my own baking scales at home then use the An Post leaflet to work out how much to charge, adding the price of packaging materials to get a total.

How do you accept payments on ebay? Do you need a paypal account that costs money?

How do you take tax into consideration?

I don't think you can sell unless you own a credit card:confused:

In order to sell you have to have a valid card registered to pay your selling fees. If you do have a paypal account Ebay can deduct their fees out of it you want (and have enough money in it) but if not Ebay deduct their fees from your card, thats why you have to have a card registered.

You don't have to have a paypal account at all but it makes accepting payments a lot easier and quicker, many people won't buy if they can't use paypal as they don't want the hassle of sending cheques/postal orders.

Check out the ebay help pages, it gives you all the information you need about starting selling in far more detail than I have here.

I don't really think about the VAT, I usually list items at low starting prices to encourage more interest so my selling fees are quite low. You could always add 20 cent or whatever to the P&P to offset the tax I suppose.

I'm also in the same boat. Trying to get set up as a seller after being a buyer for a number of years. People are too stingy on adverts :D

What changes do I need to make to my ebay account to set myself up as a seller? Also can I use my current free paypal account to accept payments or do I need to upgrade it?

eBay automatically changes your account, adding all kinds of selling pages to your My eBay page, once you set it up as a seller account. To set up a seller's account, just click on Sell at the top of most eBay pages and follow the instructions provided.

You can use your current PayPal account to accept payments. When a buyer sends you their first payment, you'll be prompted to upgrade your PayPal account to a Premier or Business account, which you'll need to do in order to accept payments.

The best place to start for selling info would probably be here:
