    Hi,

Ok mistake 1. I changed my desktop display settings to somehing (can't remember what but NOT 800x600 or 1024x768 (shich is all my screen can handle I think). Not at boot up...all is ok to about when should get the log in screen...but all I'm getting is flashing colours (windows XP). Tried F8 safe boot no joy (didn't get into safe boot) and obviously enough can't get into PC as such to chnge settings...any bright ideas?

    JOhn

this may or may not be the problem but to my knowledge
your monitor probally cant handle the refresh rate if it was the res your monitor would just go on standby
i would have thought the refresh rate would lower on safe mode .. but i could be wrong...
if you have a friend with a better monitor try that and change it or you could try your tv if you have a jack for it. otherwise try changing your graphics card if you have an old one.
although you could have blown either your graphics card or your monitor...

edit: oh just realised you said you couldnt get into safe mode not that it didnt work in there
try repeatedly pressing f8 asap when you hit the power on button. when the bios flashes it should give you some options to press.

Sounds like the refresh all right. You should be able to reset it in Safe mode though, as the gfx drivers won't be loaded
