Hi, I am from Asia and it's going to be the 1st halloween in my life. I live in a house in Dublin......we have a lot of children around and I have also a 1 year old girl. I wonder what do I need to prepare for Halloween and how many goodies/sweets I should prepare. Should I just give a piece to each kid or should I just put everything to a tray and let them grab? Should I take my daughter out as well? I am getting a bit excited and wonder how I can enjoy Halloween like everyone here. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

Will move this to the Food and Drink forum where it will get a more informed response than here.

EDIT: After Hours more suited as it is not solely a food and drink query

At halloween you will get kids calling to your door trick or treating. What I usually do is have a tin of roses and dump a fistfull of sweets into their bags when they call.

some food you could get in include, Barn brack. It is a current cake which has a ring inside it. Whever gets the ring is predicted to get married within a year.

Pumpkin, to make a jack-o-lantern. you can scoop out the contents of the pumpkin and make pie with it, you then carve out eyes, nose and mouth with jagged teeth to make a face at the front of it.

Other stuff you can do with the contents of your pumpkin, although I have never tasted these recepies so cannot say whether they are nice or not. Half the fun is trying new things though

Moving to AfterHours as the post covers the remit of several forums. Welcome to Ireland btw.

Personally, I prepare for Halloween night as if I were preparing for the Blitz. Door is locked, windows shut and letterbox taped up. Oh and the baseball bat is kept handy too. But that's just me.

I always find that the Euro2 type shops are great for buying loads of sweets. Get loads of lollipops and fizzy bars and that type of thing, and the kids always love it. Just be prepared to smile when you open the door and make a bit of smalltalk about the costumes, and what each kid is meant to be and you should be fine. I would normally give the kids a certain amount, as I reckon if you hold out a tray load, they'll probably just take everything :)

Prepare yourself for an evening of very loud fireworks, and in some parts of the country, huge bonfires. If you do bring your own children out, make sure they arent around the fires unattended as some of them can contain dangerous materials such as gas cannisters, deoderant bottles etc, but thats in the minority and shouldnt be a problem.
    Have fun!!

Get some vegitables and cover them with chocolate, let it dry over night and give that to the little feckers :D Preferably Brussel Sprouts and Celary

Actually don't really do that. I did that before and got egged :(

Keep any pets indoors, and give each kid a fairly equal amount if you can!

I agree with Archeron about the euro2 shops, good value sweets etc...

In fairness now, who didn't get apples and oranges and end up cursing the miserable feckers who gave them to you

Be sure to wear a costume yourself when you come to the door. Nothing expensive. Something you can make up at home.

And tell the kids that they are dead flies.

That reminds me - I must get some garibaldi biscuits. I give these out (along with the usual nuts & sweets) & tell the kids that the raisins are dead flies.

They normally look at me like I'm very strange.

Not surprising coz I usually dress up in nothing more than a roll of clingfilm & a smile.:D

1 is a bit young, but if you haven't met your neighbours it could be an opportunity for you - just bear in mind that your daughter may get scared by firework noises. Dress your daughter up as something (witch is always easy ;) ) and go introduce yourself. Don't leave it too late (7/8 ish is a good time) - halloween tends to descend into a version of Falluja in some places when the older kids are left out.
