Dead Laptop Ideas?

Friend asked me to look at their laptop. This is Medion 3060 from Aldi I think. Theres no warranty left, as its over 3yrs old. Warranty was 2yrs.

Laptop is connected to AC. You press the one button, Power light comes one, and the battery charging light. (I know the battery has been dead a long time). Fans spin up, HD light flickers, if you put a CD/DVD in the drive spins up, but the screen stays dead. Hook it up to an external monitor and that doesn't get a signal either. Removed and reinserted battery and memory checking all connections and still no joy. I'm thinking either the motherboard or the gfx is stuffed.

I would go with the video card here, as you are getting some indication that there is power passing through it with the HD light flickering so there is a good chance they are still alive. How to get the video card replaced is another question.:( I would imagine if it was the mobo, then you would get some of those nasty beeps that you never want to hear.

Is the gfx on a seperate card (highly unlikely, I know)? If not, then it's the motherboard itself.

Don't know if there is a lot you can do.

I thik it might be, I have another identical laptop I could swap parts between. But it would take a day or two of fiddling, and I'm temped to just tell them to buy a new one for 500 or so from the Dell Outlet.
