    Hi,
My sister is getting a laptop from dell and is wondering which processor to get. Its only for basic computer work and I was telling her to get a celeron. But she says that the lad in Dell said they are crap and you will only get two years outta it..

Which is the best mid range processor for a laptop? Im not up to speed on all the pentium "M" and centrino and the likes.. She wants something in the 1.4 to 1.8 ghz range..

    Thanks,

    Hakko

id go with a core duo. ITs basiciallt 2 pentium M cores on one chip. Great performance from them , If she dosent like the sound of that, the 1.7 or 1.86ghz pentiums M's are fine, just make sure she gets a min of 512mb ram, But aim for 1gb. And for the love of god, take the extended warrenty with dell, As they are finickey machines sometimes.

Honestly the rubbish you hear. A celeron is fine for office work. In fact, if it is solely for office work, watching movies, that sort of thing, I have a friend who does these things regularly on a 450Mhz Celeron he bought 7 years ago - no bother.

A Celeron M in a laptop will last many years, for the tasks you want, no point wasting your money on unnecessary upgrades. And for the love of god don't listen to Dell when they tell you x or y is "Crap".

The lad in Dell is on a commission. A Celeron M will do fine.

The next lie she'll hear is that 512Mb or RAM isn't enough for broadband internet access and she really really should give them €187 for another 512Mb.

-edit- more of an issue is whether a Dell laptop will hold itself together for more than 2 years anyway.

Ask him ot play some HD content :D

If its just for basic stuff a celeron will be fine. But for 100€ more id go with the Pentium M " centrino "

As it has quite a few advantages. one being build in wireless. Id still go win a minumum of 512mb of ram too, But almost all dells have this with their free memory upgrades.

Oh and really dont listen to the dell guys when they ask you which screen you want. If it can do 1024*768 at 32bit colour depth its fine. A bit more would be nicer, But not a nessesity.

    Thanks guys..
Just remembered to reply now. It was sunday night when I went to reply and the board was down.I was thinking exactly what most of you guys were thinking. I.E. Don't listen to the guy on dell..Or any salesman for that matter. I just wanted to make sure that celeron would be okay..
    Thanks
