Best way to speed up my laptop?

    I'm wondering if anyone can help me out on the best way possible to re-format my computer to make it faster and just make it like brand new.

    I have bought an external hard drive to back up my important files and I've done that so what do I do next?

    I've heard something about pressing F11 when you start up the computer at first and it will restore everything back to the beginning.

    I know there's a simpler way like "System Restore" but other than this is there a way?

    Thanks

    You want to do a clean install of the operating system ?

    Well for that usually you need the XP install CD that should have come with the laptop.

    Alternatively some manufacturers do not supply the install CD but use a restoration image supplied on a CD or a hidden partition of the hard drive. This image will put the laptops OS back to the state when it was shipped to you.

    What make laptop is it and have you checked the discs that came with it ?

    You can avoid a format if you take the time to prune unnecessary programs from the laptop & do a few maintenance tasks;
    * Look whats loading at startup.
    * Check what kind of anti-virus program your using as some slow down the machine.
    * Perform a disk defrag.
    * Investigate a possible RAM upgrade for the laptop which would make a noticeable difference.
    * Run scans for spyware make sure nothing's bogging down the system.

    Lol something worked anyway. I tried removing programs from my computer and hey presto it is faster now! Not running as slow. I deleted some useless program from college that was like 800MB. Ridiculous. Don't even use the shaggin thing!

    Oh well! Crisis over, thanks for the help 8T8
