Desktop Dell PC only 6 months old.
You can log on to the PC but only the background comes up on the desktop. No programmes ,no start. You cannot get into any files. Taskmanager will come up but thats not much help.

When you shut down the PC, hard drive will shutdown but the monitor keeps changing colours until you turn it off at the front.

Anyone any ideas, is this a virus or is it something wrong with the PC itself.
    Thanks for any help

When you say Taskmanager will show up, do you mean the taskbar at the bottom?

No not taskbar. When you press control al and delete the Task Manager does show up. Message also came up at the start MCAffee recommends you scan your PC, but can't get into anything to actually run a virus scan.. Any ideas would be brill.

When you open task manager, try clicking File->New Task (Run) and enter explorer.exe in the box and see if your taskbar and desktop icons show up.

What happens if you boot into safe mode?

If that does not work, when your pc is booting up, before it brings up the windows screen, tap the F8 button, a menu should come up, choose "Last known good configuration".

I have tried going in to explorer through task manager but it dosnt bring it up. I have created a new task and I am looking in the Program Files but I can't find the application to run the Virus Scan

Can you boot into safe mode as suggested? Tap the F8 key when the computer boots up and select Safe Mode from that menu.

Is the desktop normal there? Scan for viruses and restart.

You say you tried opening explorer.exe directly from the task manager and nothing happened? Can you find explorer.exe already in the process list, kill it, then try running it again? Sort them by CPU usage and see if something's eating all the cpu time.

    Sounds dodgy alright...

explorer not showing in task manager. These are the top cpu usage

    mcshield.exe 26,376kb
    svchost.exe 19,220
    wuauclt.exe 7,520
    lsass.exe 6,152

We tried running virus scan in safe mode. Detected 11 files. Would not clean or quarantine all of them..Problem persisting

That's memory usage - CPU usage will be expressed as a percentage... usually, "System idle" or something will be listed as using 99.
