Linksys router problem

My linksys is connected to the blue NTL modem and it seems to be kicking up. Im typing in 192.168.1.1 in the browser of the PC thats working fine (Upstairs) and its timing out.. which is odd considering thats the setup screen address right?

The laptop downstairs, nearer to the router, is stuck on "looking up www.whatever.." and Im sooo getting sick of it deciding from time to time not to work anymore. Usually going to the router setup screen and renewing the DHCP does the trick, but this time I cant even get to the router. Its odd considering the PC upstairs, which is connecting to the router wirelessly, is browsing the net just fine!

    Grr.

Still no joy.. I've reformatted windows and put service pack 2 onto it. Its maxed up with the windows updates.

It'll go as far as looking for an ip address and sees the linksys network. Im putting in the WEP key which I got by going onto the PC upstairs and going to the router setup page.

in your first post you say that you cannot access the router setup screen from your pc. in the second post you say that you can?
so can you access the router setup page or what?

    Sorry for being unclear,

I have 2 computers. 1 laptop, 1 PC. The PC also has a wireless card. I can get to the setup screen from the PC.

The laptop is seeing the wireless router but not talking to it in any way.. So I cant use the setup screen on the laptop unless I physically plug it into the router with a cross over cable.

I HATE wireless routers! I'm on my third one this week due to incompatability issues, poor support, appalling manuals, random disconnections as well as plain old not working.
Currently have Netgear DG834gt that appears to be fine.

Apologies for threadjacking but I really needed to have a rant somewhere :o

I hope you get your problems solved soon Trotter :)

    All is now well..

A friend of mine (my finest weapon against computer bogies) called in and messed with the WEP settings in TCP/IP on the laptop. The change caused the laptop to cop on and look for an IP address. We're in business now.

nice one trotter, glad to hear it's sorted.
one thing though, you mention connecting the laptop directly into the router using a crossover cable. whay are you using a crossover cable? is a standard ethernet cable not used in this situation?
the reason i ask is that a mate is having trouble connecting a laptop to a wireless router, but he is using a cat5 cable.................should he be using a crossover cable??

Hmm.. I may be wrong there. Its a network cable that came with it anyway.. I'll have a look in the morning and see if its a crossover.

i think i know what your problem was correct me if im wrong
if you dont have dhcp server set up you have to specify the details in your network wireless connection for hte benifit of anyone else who might have the problem if you right click on the wireless connection go to the end option (internet protocol tcp/ip) then properties
    ip: something like 192.168.0. (1-254)
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway and dns server shoudl be same as router.

alternitivly in your wireless settings window that windows uses you could have seen the wireless network and just not connected.

dhcp will auto assign details to nodes connecting looking for them from a certain range .
