I currently on placement at the moment and am trying to use the computers at work but IT services have some kind of firewall whereby if you visit a website more then 3 times it gets blocked (this includes paramedical ones which i need for research).

is there any way i can set up a proxy server to bypass this without going to IT services everytime i want a website unblocked (which takes time)?

This doesn't answer your specific question, however I have to say that I think the quickest way to find yourself no longer on placement would be to attempt to circumvent (or actually successfully circumvent) security procedures and policies in place. They're there for a reason.

    Regards,

    Liam

in fairness though it affects everyone trying to log on in the workplace and not just me. The rules in place seem unreasonable if we can't do our work.

While I sympathise with your situation, it's not as if there is a problem with connectivity because of something that the IT people haven't put in place. It's because of something that somebody went to time and trouble (and possibly expense) to put in place.

It may not be the best solution. It may even be hindering people doing their job. And I really do sympathise with you because I've got my own experiences of silly (and, sometimes, downright stupid) rules and procedures regarding Internet connectivity. But it's not your place to be second-guessing the people who make the decisions in your place of work.

    Hope you get it sorted.

    Regards,

    Liam

im' not second guessing them. the point is all the healthcare staff have jobs to do. we complained about it before and nothing happened. IT services are an axillary service to our own and are preventing us from doing our research jobs. It's not really a service if we can't use it. I can't think blocking ALL websites is really helpful to anyone..and our time could be better spent not running after IT services who should at least have some kind of list of accessible and non accessible sites if they were doing they're job properly.

I've got to agree with Liam here.
If you have a problem with the IT services, consult with your manager and get the issue escalated.
There's no point trying to go around it.
In the end you my get fired for breaking the IT rules, and it won't do you much good to turn around and say that you had to do it.

Also, its against the charger to request help in trying to bypass security setups.

I agree with Liam, don't circumvent the security thats in place. Which is the lesser evil, not being able to do your work, or being fired?

well thanks for all the replies anyhow. it's more of a departmental issue anyhow that is effecting more people then just me so i will take it up with my manager see if she proritise this as an issue with them to get it sorted for once and for all. thanks once again :)

That would be the correct way to deal with the issue. IMO.

Usually i would say, yeah find a away around it, But i never thought what the implications of your actions could lead to. Ie. getting fired.

Maybe you and your co-workers who feel this is hindering your work, can go see your manager and explain it to her. Stay calm and just put your poiint across. Unless your manager is a idiot, she will seriously consider your reccomendations and take it to her boss.

    Best of luck with it.
