DNS issues on WinXP

    Hi All,

My winxp sp2 machine is powered on 24x7 and on average about once every 1-3 days, DNS (I believe) gets screwed up such that I cannot connect to most sites. Some sites still work (which ones do varies from time to time) and programs using IP continue to work fine (such as bittorrent).

I do a repair on the connection, disable and re-enable, reset the DSL modem etc... but nothing fixes the problem but a reboot of the XP machine.

Any ideas whats going on, its seriously annoying!

    Cheers,
    Jab

You wouldn't be using Esat/BT broadband by any chance?

A few friends have been complaining about similar problems recently. Tracert and all still worked, but addresses wouldn't be resolved.
I suggested manually adding DNS entries to the network card, esat (192.111.39.1) and eircom (159.134.237.6). By default 'ipconfig /all' will probably point DNS to your router, where it's meant to forward requests.

    Nope, not esat.

Just after posting my original question, the problem occurred, so I rebooted and the problem happened immediatley after reboot again?....so I rebooted the PC and the ADSL modem and everything has been working fine since?!?...

Am begining to suspect the modem could be the root cause somehow??

BTW: You are correct, the PC's dns points to the ADSL modem/router which in turn points to my services providers DNS servers (Netsource)

    Any other thoughts?

Try flushing your DNS when you get the problem, from a promp type "ipconfig /flushdns"

Have you got both the primary and secondary DNS server IP addresses configured ?
