Can't use IDE2 or IDE3

Have a bit of a problem.

I have a Gigabyte motherboard, the GA-8I915P Duo Pro. It has three IDE ports. I have one HDD as well as a DVD burner and a CD-ROM drive.

I can't get all of these working at the same time -- for the past year, my CD-ROM drive has been idle as it's not being recognised. I had to set the HDD as master and the DVD burner as slave and put them both on IDE1. This is not an ideal situation.

I've been through setting jumpers and all that. After the BIOS splash screen, I see another splash from a VIA RAID tool and both the DVD burner and CD-ROM drive are recognised but not usable in any OS when on IDE2 or IDE3.

    What's going on?!

I've been through the BIOS setup a few times now, turning off RAID [even on SATA ports].

I'm really annoyed by this now. It's in the motherboard manual [a hopeless translation as usual]:
    Q. Why can't I use the IDE2?
    A. Please refer to the user manual and check whether you have connected any cable that is not provided with the motherboard package to the USB Over Current pin in the Front USB Panel. If the cable is your own cable, please remove it from this pin and do not connect any of your own cables to it.

But, in a way, I can use IDE2 if the VIA RAID tool is recognising the drives. I did connect the break-out Firewire and USB2 plate that came with the motherboard.

At the moment, I can only use my HDD. It's connected to IDE1 [red in the diagram below; IDE2 and IDE3 are green].

I have considered an IDE-SATA converter for the HDD and use two two optical drives on IDE1. Or should I buy a PCI card with IDE ports on it? Just one problem -- it would have to work under Linux as well.

This is my motherboard. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Your motherboard is based on the Intel 915 chipset which features only 1 IDE controller allowing a maximum of two IDE devices.

To augment the boards capabilities Gigabyte have added a third party controller and integrated it into the motherboard this is the VIA IDE controller.

For the VIA VT6410 IDE RAID Controller to be correctly identified in Windows you must provide a driver for the controller.

    On this page you can see the two drivers provided;
A pre-install driver this is used if you want Windows to incorporate the driver during the installation procedure.
A driver for an already installed Windows environment.

Linux drivers for the VT6410 controller are available for certain distros on VIA-Arenas website.

Also not sure about the VT6410 but not all add-in IDE controllers support optical drives only certain ones do which may explain why even if it isnt a driver issue the DVD/CD drives do not work.

Tried downloading those drivers from Gigabyte's European mirror several times today. The American mirror was faster. Finally got the file I needed.

I'm running Vista RC2 and I had to set the program's compatability mode to XP SP2 and then it installed.

I rebooted and got an error about mapping devices, but, IT WORKS! I'd kiss you right now if I could, 8T8! Just so happy! :D I should have posted this thread when I built the machine in August 2005.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
