    hi,

a few weeks ago i took a look at a pc with a login problem. the problem seemed to be virus related and repair install the solution. this pc did not have the restore disk, they had lost it.
so i used my one (dell) which worked, i repaired windows and it worked fine.

but now a few weeks later, when they try to login, they get a message saying this version of windows needs to be activated and registered. if you say no, it justs logs out.

if you say yes, it gives you option of register and activate, or just activate. i tried just activate but the number it tries to dial wont work, there is also an option of ringing a customer service rep.

so i may have to ring.

the thing is, this pc was legit and the windows xp on it originally wasnt stolen or copied or anything. my op sys disk i used is legit and not stolen or copied, i just tried to repair windows, it worked so i thought nothing of it.

do you think i will have any problems if i ring up??

in fairness there should not be any issues since both parties actually bought the op sys when buying the pc.

or is there any other way around this without doing any of this???

Who owns the PC - they should be able to confirm the license.

Does it have a COA on the side ? -
Does the owner have a cert / box ?
If it's a Dell you put the tag on the support site and see if it shipped with XP.

If the windows version is OEM then you've the opposite problem, you can't spearate the license from the motherboard ! ( unless you are a volume license holder and enrole it in an upgrade program in the first 90 days or so, but that costs nearly as much as ) - so if the PC or the order shows evidence of OEM being supplied then it's ok.

as for which CD , it doesn't matter, except that some OEM CD's won't install on other brands, It does matter however, if it's PRO or HOME (or in vista's case 7 different non-interchanagble versions  )
