Working with your PDF's

I've a lot of college notes and documentation in PDF format. Which is handy in one sense because you can carrry it all with you. But its a pain to navigate and track where you've read too if its not bookmarked properly, and you can't make notes like you can on a paper copy. Any suggestion how I can add this kinda functionality or workarounds?

Adobe acrobat professional allows you to add notes to pdf's.

    It is rather expensive though.

You should check out Foxit's PDF programs way cheaper (& faster) than Adobe's products.

Their free PDF reader puts Adobe's to shame.

I've been playing with the trial of PDF reDirect Professional v2. It allows me to unlock PDF's and add my own comments and highlight things. Using an old copy of Adobe Acrobat that I've had for years. So thats some progress. Not very slick though. I'll check out that Foxit Software. The Adobe stuff is painfully slow sometimes. The Foxit reader allows highlighing and anotation. Sounds good.

    hhmm,

I just tried that foxit reader. It looked promising, but it can't get the annotate tool to work. It gives me the message in the pic, which seems to suggest it should work. But then nothing happens.

    Same here. Pity. :(

Try contacting your college tech people to see if they can resell a licence for acrobat professional - it might be worth it (if you're still in college, that is). Sometimes they'll even have a site licence or similar.

See the green annotation arrow you have to select the icon to the right of that called typewriter with the drop down selection box from there you can select the highlight annotation tool.

Thanks for the tip that works now. What the heck does the green annotation arrow do? Is it only for moving annotations and notes etc. Kinda weird but usable I guess. When the highlight annotation tool is active you don't need the arrow to move items. But when the highlight annotation tool is inactive you do,

I know I'm tired but that comment makes no sense to me

I'll try that. But I think they all use openoffice (badly) to create them. No bookmarks and protected so you can't edit them. I can unprotect them using that trial of reDirect Professional, and I have an ancient copy of acrobat here that allows me to add my own bookmarks. Perhaps I just need to come up to speed with working with PDF's as a study tool and how to work with them.

If the copyright holder has restricted the pdf...
"copyright holder" means they get to decide what you can do with their document, or you could ask nicely if they could put in bookmarks

you could alway <gasp> print them out and use a pencil

As I said I can unprotect them, and its far easier to carry a bunch of PDF's than 2 rucksacks of paper around with you. ;)

    coola boola, that works now.
The arrow i was selecting is only for selecting already annotated txt, so thats why i couldn't do anything with it.

The only different between this and the prov version is that the free version leaves a message at the top of the page.
