IM trying to convert some video files to dvd. Tried lots of software that does this job but keep having a the same problem with all of them. Before the process has finished the computer switches off. I don’t have this problem with anything elserunning on my pc. Any help would be great.

Are you sure there isn't an option in settings or somewhere with an automatic shutdown when the conversion is finished?

Yes there is an option to shutdown when conversion is finished, but that option is off. The problem is that the PC shuts down before the conversion is finished only does about a quarter and then PC goes off.

dvd encoding uses 100% cpu usage. try it again and monitor your temps, It may be a overheating problem. or then again, maybe not.

I'd tend to agree with anti.
If its happening with different apps then overheating sounds likely.

Try downloading Prime95 (info and d/l links HERE) as it will stress your cpu 100% similar to video encoding. See if your PC still shuts off...or even better monitor your temperatures with Speedfan and let us know how hot things get.

it might be worth a try now, but open up the pc, disconnect the ide cable and power cable to the dvd drive and then plug them in again. then leave the side of the pc case off and try again. If it suceeds this time its more then likely a temp problem :)

I'd second this. Encoding is very CPU intensive, badly cooled PC's will basically either freeze or reboot.

What's the make/model of your PC?

Your PC wouldn't be a Fujistu Siemens Scaleo by any chance, would it? :(

This has done the job, thanks anti.

It’s a self build I did about two years ago. IM not an expert or anything like that, Just wanted to save money at the time. But IM still using it and had no major problems with it. Ill have to get more fans if im doing any more dvd encoding.

yeah. after 2 years the atric 5 of whatever you have used has mroe then likely gone off now. Remove the cpu cooler, use isopropanol to clear it all off and re add it. Tiny ammount in the middle. and spread it wthnly with a credit card or similar. Case fans are a good idea too :)
