There will be a Sayoc Kali training group meet in Dublin on Sunday October 29th at 12 mid-day. I know its the bank holiday weekend but unfortunately there was no other available alternative. If you're interested in coming along, even if you've never trained weapons before, you must PM me or contact me at longfist@eircom.net For those that don't know much about Sayoc Kali have a look at www.sayoc.com for more information.

I would have liked to go along to this and had a look, but unfortunately it clashes with UFR.

    Best of luck anyway.

Will there be any more Kilkenny sessions Dave ?

Hi 17HMR, sorry for the late reply but I've no internet access at the moment which makes it a pain to have to go to a cafe to get online. As we have a good few lads from the greater Dublin area we have decided to run the next few meets for now in Dublin as its means less travelling for the majority (but not me though:(). If things change we may resume training in the Kilkenny venue but not for the moment. Hey Barry pity it clashes but hopefully you can come along the next time.

    Hi Dave,

What sort of numbers would you need to make a regular Kilkenny session viable ?

Hi Martin, its just that there is a good few guys from in and around Dublin at the moment so its just wherever is the most suitable for the majority. If there was a majority from near Kilkenny we'ed look to change the venue back to there.

I was at this on Sunday so I thought I'd tell y'all a bit about it.

I had trained Sayoc with Dave for a little while previously but it was so long ago I went along on Sunday as a beginner, looking to just see and learn the basics again.

I should point out first that everything was done with training blades!!
We started off practicing quick draws. Then we did knife orientation (I think it was called) this was various types of spinning, flipping and tossing knives from hand to hand which looked cool  and was tricky to do. This is done to improve handling of the knife.

We then went on to the first basic attack template (the 3 of 9 I think it was called) - a sequence of nine targets. There is a different sequence of targets for left and right hands. This is also a lesson in anatomy as you learn the name of the targets as well. Myself and the other people with little or no experience were paired up with more senior guys. I was working with a lad called Mick who was very helpful.

We then split up into two groups - the experienced and less-experienced. In the less experienced group there was myself, two first timers and two lads who had been training for a while. We carried on with the basic template doing different variations such as right hand lead (this is where the first right side attack is followed by the first left attack then the second right attack etc), and then simultaneous cuts. This soon gets complicated and it's this type of thing that I love about FMA - it expands your mental capacity!

Then Dave moved us on to a drill based on the right hand side of the template. We spent a lot of time on this drill as we learnt each step (counters and counter counters as I think of them) from Dave then practiced them with partners.

Lastly Dave covered some Receiver Grips with us. These are for controlling and using the knife of an attacker while they still hold it.

    Then we were done.

All of the instruction was punctuated with Dave's explanations which are great for giving an understanding of the art, its history and philosophy, general SD sense and a bit of craic.

These training days give a great introduction to the art and I give them the Pro. F official seal of approval (:D ) for anyone who is looking for an MA that deals with edged weapons in a realistic manner.

Apologies for not showing up, I totaled my leg the day before so spent the day on the sofa. Although one of my lads made it down and enjoyed the session.

Will this be a regular thing now? If so I'll be there as often as possible.

    Dave
