I have recently been receiving attachements with 0kb, which is really strange as there is stuff in the doc, once I make one change to the content, it changes from 0 to 28kb.

are the word documents attachments that you have been expecting or are they from unknown sources?

Whats in the doc format, since it comes in under 1k, I'd guess it's not formatted text, as if it is a normal formatted .doc the size at least to 25k.

The reason it's changing to 28k is because once you save it word is saving all the formatting data which will consume the extra space. If you don't believe me do some research on the .doc specification, it is very complex and store a hell of a lot of information.

I'd be very wary of it though, are you sure you are getting the documents from a reliable source?

yes, they are from a reliable source. can somebody actually set up a doc to have non-formated text? how can one do that?

Yes they can, you simply give the file a .doc extension instead of a .txt extension.

When you load the file into Word, you should be presented with a dialog warning you that the file contains no formatting. Do you get this, if not the file contains formatting and is probably a real .DOC.
