Clearing it of spyware/adware & viruses should get rid of the slow start-up problems, if its still slow on startup then check out msconfig, and untick any programs that are not needed to start up. might also run diags on the hardware, could use http://www.ultimatebootcd.com for this.

Start->Run->msconfig.exe in the box and look in the Startup tab. Scanning in safe mode is probably best.

More a general computer problem than a laptop problem.

Moving from Laptops to Computers - you'll get more repsonses over there.

ok from start - progs - accessories - system tools- system info, i can see that there about 100 progs starting at startup. pure **** stuff. what is the easiest way of removing these??

In the Startup tab in msconfig.exe, untick the box beside the ones you don't want starting. Check the Startup folder also in Start->Programs.

Start by disabling everything and gradually add back in stuff that you think you may need.

To disable everything, click on "Disable All" (see screen shot), reboot and see what happens.

A great deal of those ones you are looking at in System Information would be used by Windows. StartupCPL is another handy utility for configuring statup programs. What anti virus and anti spyware programs did you try?

Have a look under Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and see if any adware has been installed in there.

i decided to format and reinstall. Seems the best way to clear everything.
