if I buy an archos 504 from a u.s site, do I have to pay additional charges for tax once it gets here, or is the final price on th website THE FINAL PRICE?

It will be the final price, if you are lucky and the C&E don't stop the package coming in. They might even allow it in and follow it up with a seperate bill for import duty.

The value of the package will be declared on the outside. American companies don't normally like to mark packages as "gifts:: $10 value", but you might be lucky. You won't know, till you get the package.

I bought an archos PMA400 from the US a year or so ago - I got a notice in my postbox to collect it at the post office where I had to pay duty on it. It still worked out cheaper than Irish prices. It depends as far as I know where you buy it. EG if you buy from ebay they often put things like "gift" or "value $10" on the package

Just be prepared to pay duty on it, the adding gift or value thing doesn't really work the majority of the time.

Depends on what Customs deem to be the brand new price of the item being shipped. Also be wary that Customs often don't always know what tax bracket some items fall into. I have had quite a few large items shipped from the US and have been lucky each time with regards the item being marked as a gift and getting through undetected as such.

the price of it here in Ireland, or the price of it in the country of origin? in % the max?

I would suspect it would be the price here. Otherwise you could buy in Sudan or something and claim it cost 30 wotsits and pay 21% of that which would work out at €0.02!

I think it is the price here considering the prices the item would be selling for here would be higher then the country of origin. Hence why you are purchasing outside this country.

As I said though, it all depends on if they tax it for the correct type of item it is. For example, sometimes they tax microphones under the heading "Musical Instruments" when it is Audio equipment or such like.
