why not grab the local goldenpages, and make a list of call the companies near where you live, that you might like to work for.

Call them and ask who is in charge of hiring office staff.

Then post them your CV, with a personal letter, and personally addressed to this person, outlining what skills you can bring to the company.

Wait 5 days or so, and then call up, ask for the person, ask did they get your CV and letter, and is there any chance of an interview or job going.

If they say yes...great you got an interview.

if they say no, thank them, and ask do they know of any other companies in the area who might be looking for office staff? some will, and will be impressed you asked, and might recommend you!

    Take the proactive approach.

back in 94 when I came home to ireland from abroad, I needed a job fast, and i was in travel sector then (today I am in different area), and I had limited time, so I got about 100 Cvs made up, stuck on a suit and this was in middle of roasting summer, and spent 3 days and went into every travel agency from rathmines to dorset street walking, asked for the manager, and gave them my CV. it was hard to do, and remember in 1994 there was not as many jobs about, but at end of 3 days, I had a lead and got a job, be it a crap one, and that got me a start, and 3 months later I landed my dream job (at the time ) in one of what then was the best travel places in town to work in , great job, decent money (which was crap by 2006 standards) brilliant fun, and a great crew to go drinking with on friday nights!!!

    Persistence pays!

Thankyou Millionaire. I have already sent out a few CV's to companies in the locality but I'll be more persistant now and try calling. Thanks for the advice.

yeah you need to get tons out like spend a few quid and time get 100 or 200 out or break it down if you are work and get 20 out a night for 2 weeks. ...make it a full time job for a week if you have to, paper the town. like remember when your a kid, and the circus came....they had posters in ever shop window and every telephone pole!!!!

If you get 100 or 200 out, and do the below, you will be dictating your terms of employment soon enough. do not tell the agencies what you are doing either. its none of their business.

I work on the permise that 100 contacts will get you a 10% reponse....you might be 5 or 6 good responses in the 10, 3 thanks but no thanks...and 1 F Off I hate you! LOL!!!! the 5 or 6 good responses might get you 2 or 3 interviews.

    as I said winning pointers.

    1. Name of Person who hire, Dear Paddy...not Dear sir/madame
    2. follow up with a call
    3. if you get an interview, send a thank you note/car immediately, get it in post same day.

There is zillions of companies from small to big in West Dub, a bit of work and you should have no problem.

some recruitment companies suck, some are good...I know. ahem.... ;-)

Thanks. Oh I've given up on the Recruitment agency thing now...a few called and I went in and they said they'd have no bother in finding suitable work for me and that was 3 weeks ago, have heard nothing back.

Unfortunate about recruitment cos, is they get in jobs, and client wants skills A,B C, ...if agent does not sent A,B, C client gives recruitment person a bollocking...and might not give them any more business.

So recruitment persona gets loads of applications, and will pick the few that is closest match. so that leaves a load of people, who applied hanging about, time goes on and they are forgotten about, and get understandable annoyed.

I am a recruitment person, but I only work a small sub niche within IT world, so I only get a few applications, and can talk or at least email most, and tell them the update, even if it is not good news. at least the people know, and they same ok with that.

Sometimes i feel sorry for people who are really trying to get a better job or a start and i cannot help them, maybe because I do not have the right job, or what I have is not the right fit, so I try to send them to someone who might be able to help them better. Plus I do a fair low fee for my clients and do not rip them off.

I guess its not a perfect world, some of us try our best, and its hard, and then on the other side you got the complete cowboys some of whom are quite established companies, you will lie, cheat, and sell their own mother to get you to take a job you do not want. just for the commission they get.

its them that gets us lads that try our best to be decent and truthful, a bad name.

anyway good luck with the search....remember....keep pushing...the more you get out, the more chance you have of landing a better job.

another idea for you is, if you go to www.iflow.ie these are a fax service, you can make a list of all the companies in your area west dublin etc , and fax a 1 page profile of your skills and job you want and include your mobile and email...you do not have to say your full name. FAO Hiring Manager. Might cost you 100 euro, and you might get a response.... but it is not as effective as the personal letter to the named hiring manager way.

Still if your keen enough, it might be worth a try.

I used to teach self defence at night to office workers, and I used this service to send flyers of my self defence courses to offices in Dublin 2, and I got business out of it too. its a great wee service.

Most recruitment companies are usually based in Dublin, for Dublin jobs, and are therefore useless. Thus, try some local recrutiment companies. There's one on Leixlip Main Street, between the Middle Shop, and the Three Sisters. Starts with the letter "E". Forget the name, though.

Also, EBS in Lucan were taking on staff, I recall someone saying to me about them going for an interview last week with the one in Lucan, soo drop in a cv there.

Finally, FAS, and other public job places: go in, and ask are there any office type jobs nearby. They may know some little business that needs office staff, but doesn't have the money to pay for an ad.

I work in Greenogue (Rathcoole) and the guy I work with lives in Lexlip, it takes him about 20 mins to get to work, and there are hundreds of businesses up there, maybe post your cv around up there?
