Processor upgrade: To be or not to be?

Hi there, I currently have an AMD 3700+ 2.2gHz 1MB processor and to be honest, I really can't be arsed come January to have to build a whole new machine around Vista and was wondering whether or not buying the X2 4600+ is worth it? (i.e. will there be a significant performance increase for the price compared to what I have already or shall I just wait and build a new rig in the future?). Thanks.

Not worth it IMO... not unless you have applications you specifically want to use with dual core.
Just overclock your 3700, you'll probably get it up to the same kind of performance level that you'd get out of a single X2 4600 core anyway.
Hold on to your money and put it towards a Core 2 Duo system (bookies favorite at the moment)... that extra €250 will come in handy.

    My 2c anyway.

I had a 3700+ and moved to the 3800+ X2. I have it overclocked to 4600+ x2 speeds. For individual tasks you wont notice any real speed increase, but where there's multithreaded applications, or you want to do two things at once, the dual core really shines.

I'm kinda on the fence. It depends what you use the computer for really.

Would you consider getting the 3800+ X2 with a decent cooler and overclocking?

(or as donkey says, you could overclock the 3700. I never did with mine, but they're great for it by all accounts).

I would wait and save for a Core 2 Duo system, or wait to see what AMD are preparing to do with the change to socket AM2. The CPU you have should run Vista quite comfortably anyway.

you can get a core 2 duo E6300 system for the exact same price as an AMDX2 3800+ system. Of course, the E6300 is a much faster chip at stock speeds and is a decent overclocker.

Mine is currently at 338fsb as opposed to the initial 266 (making it nearly 2.4ghz, the speed of the E6600).

EDIT: At stock speeds the E6300 is roughly between an X2 4600+ and X2 4400+ depending on benchmarks. Closer to the 4600+ i think, but still slightly slower. But it does cost a lot less :p Take a look at the last post on this page and onwards: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=115045&page=4
