I apologise initially for my naivete in these matters, but I just opened up my new television set and I dont have NTL/Sky sorted out yet, is there any way I can get the basic rte and tv3. No "rabbits ears" came with the tele, just a power lead. Thanks

A lot depends on where you live and what the terrestrial reception is like in the area. If you don't know, it might be worth asking one of your neighbours.

At the least you'd need some kind of set-top aerial, which are available in most hardware stores.

But first, let us know where you are and we may have a better idea of how to help.

thanks charles, am in citywest and literally just set the tele up, but looking at snow!!! I thought that some tele's would have a built in aerial etc etc

A wire coat hanger and some sticky tape should get a signal.

    A joke croucher...

but there is a round socket with a smaller round hole marked "Aerial". Buy a minature TV aerial

    Black plastic with silvery rods.

You should just about get a signal from Three Rock there, but it is starting to go out of range.

Or 200cm / 8" wire dangling out of middle of aerial socket (not very good).

Only tiny portable sets have built in aerials and those aerials are fairly useless.

unless you are using Kipure the traditional "rabbit ears" is not so good as the UHF only for Three Rock
Picture of typical UHF only set top aerial that works even better in the attic:

    If there's a cable running into your house you'll probablt get RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4

The OP poster said he doesn't have NTL sorted.

Doesn't mean there isn't a cable running into his house

Connection to cable TV without payment is theft.
