Porterhouse Oktoberfest

My better half went down to the Porterhouse with a friend last night and brought back a promotional card from their Oktoberfest promotion.

According to the card, their Oktoberfest draught beers are:

    Andechs Spezial Helle 5.8%
    Andechs Dunkel 4.8%
    Paulaner Oktoberfest 6.0%
    Kölsch 4.4%
    Herbrucker 5.0%
    Haus Weiss 5.0%
    Temple Brau 4.3%
    Haus Weiss Oktoberfest 6.5%

Promotional material I am taking this from is a “Beer Passport”, which has a list of 20 German bottled beers inside, with space for a stamp beside each one. If you buy any 4 of these beers, you get a pint of Kölsch, Herbrucker, Haus Weiss, or Haus Weiss Oktoberfest for free.

The Oktoberfest food offer is Frankfurter, Sauerkraut and bread for €6.50 or Frankfurter, Sauerkraut, bread + pint of Kölsch for €10.

The Porterhouse Oktoberfest began on the 12th and and will continue until the 22nd of this month, which is this Sunday. Kind of short if you ask me.

I dropped into the Porterhouse on Parliament Street yesterday much anticipating some tasty beer and food but was sadly dissapointed. They had only one unusual beer on tap (the Paulaner Oktober brew) and when I asked the bar keep about any Oktoberfest food he told me there was nothing like that being prepared. The Oktoberfest in the Porterhouse has been a bit weak the last few years. They keep on getting Andechs Dunkel on tap which is nothing special at all. A few years back they had Adventinus on tap and I had to be carried out of the place. Might tasty stuff. Anyone else think it's not up to scratch?

I'm going to be stuck in Dublin next week and think I'll call in. They have good food and I'd like to try some of their seasonal draughts. Thanks for the info!

Damn it Hendrix... You posted while I was typing. You got a better way for me to kill my nights?

All us beer buffs know that The Porterhouse do the best beer in town so it's not difficult to pass a very tasty evening supping their own beers even if the imports are not up to scratch. Don't get me wrong, I love the place to death.

That seems extremely poor to me. It's not like the Porterhouse is such a widely-ranging chain bar that such a promotion could be expected to be "participating outlets only". There are four branches, one of which is in Covent Garden in London!

If they can't sort their three branches out to support a 10-day festival with the food and beers they advertise, then somebody in the marketing department isn't speaking to someone in all of three pubs.

Five pubs including the one in London; Temple bar, Bottom of Grafton street, Galsnevin and Bray, but yes, I agree, if they are going to run a promotion they should make sure that ALL the pubs are running it and doing it properly.

I find the Porterhouse North, in Galsnevin, is the best one and it was there that the promotional material came from. They did a good job of the beers of the world promotion last year, (or was that the year before?) nice food for the Italian week.

I'll have to sort out a trip up there to see the situation for myself :) Just trying to figure out when I can get a night out.

Had a pint of Paulaner Oktoberfest last night in the porterhouse Parliament Street , it’s a really nice beer,. I generally not a big fan of lagers (bock’s been the exception), but I do like this Oktoberfest/Marzen style.

Also they appear to be doing the Oktoberfest food now, look interesting. They are also pushing Aventinus a lot, if that beer caches on there is going to be a lot of drunken people!

Aventinus is a wonderful beer. One of my all time favourites.

At 8% ABV it certainly deserves a good dose of caution, in any quantity.

The eisenbock (icebock) weights in at 12%, a few of them will really mess with your head!!

I was basing my count on the Irish pubs listed on their website (which didn't include bottom of Grafton Street when I checked) minus the London branch. Is the Grafton Street definitely belonged to that brewery?

Yes it is, used to be judge Roy beans. I have been there a couple of time, not as big beer selection as the other branches

I think their website needs a little updating.

While I agree with the general points I think Andhechs produce good beers, which incidentally are very highly regarded in Germany, not to mention the likes of beeradvocate. I visited their monastery just outside of Munich where they offer the full strength versions of these beers (don't ask) and was very impressed with the stuff.
