    Evening chaps, and chapettes.

Okay the problem is, I have a 320gb toshiba External hdd, But its knackered. As when plugged in i get a message tellingme that there is a short in the usb socket, Which im guessing means the board in the caddy is ****ed, Ive taken it apart and had a look and cant see whats wrong with it, The hdd poweres up no problems.

So in stead of buying a caddy for it i thougt i would just stick it in one of my pcs. Now this is where im having problems. In the caddy is had no jumper for master slave, as i guess usb dosent need it, So i used a jumper from a old hdd, Hooked it up to the old motherboard and went into the bios. Found the hdd no probs at all. Which i was hoping meant that all the data on it is fine. But i get into windows and Its telling me i need to format the drive.

Are all my films, tv eps music and other general stuff gone ? I know i should have backed up, but i was lazy =(

Is there a way to get the data on the drive readable again ?

    Thanks in advance :)

i had something similar happen with an external hard drive ... it was the PSU that died ... but same deal, i decided to stick the drive into the pc ... worked fine

i would suggest removing the jumper, and cabling the drive to the secondary IDE controller, most PCs's have two IDE headers ... make the drive the only device on the chain, so master/slave is not an issue, and boot from a drive on the primary chain

hopefully your data is safe ... good luck

Hi, you need to download one of the data repair utilities, ger another HDD, both of them stick to PC and coppy data across. DO NOT write anythng on damaged drive!

    you can use :
    Drive rescue
    GetDataBack (FAT or NTFS versions)
or any other... usually they work on same basics...

you might find difficult to restore data if you using ntfs file system... Try to find something acrosss the web, there is plenty of people solving same problem...

If your FAT table (partition table) is damaged, you ned to scan through whole disc to get your files back. Be ware of programs witch restoring just files (not actully directory tree - you wont sort that mess again :-D ). if you will need something, you can usually find me on ICQ :-)
Can recommend Drive rescue - i have repared many of HDD with this :-) And it is freeware too. But quite old and you might find difficult to find download :-(

PS sorry for english mistakes, hope you can undestand...
