Banned IE domain names

    From Slashdot...
"The Irish domain prefix, .ie, is controlled by an organization called the IE Domain Registry. In their terms and conditions they state, 'The proposed domain name must not be offensive or contrary to public policy or generally accepted principles of morality.
' But this policy is only applied to sex words as this adult webmaster has discovered. Murder.ie is acceptable, Porn.ie is not. Can a word be immoral? And in this day and age, should a government-chosen domain registry be allowed to enforce their own moral code on the public?"

What do the general masses think about this? Is it ok to have sex.ie and murder.ie but not allow porn.ie?
I don't know if this is the last of pre-90's Irish Catholic-induced censorship coming into play or if it's the correct decision in the case of the word 'porn'.

Posted in AH and not Webmaster/Flash as it's a topical subject and not a tech one.

Porn is offensive? This isn't the 50's. Gosh IE Domain Registry, get over it.

Doesn't Doleman own sex.ie, or someone from boards own it?

well does anybody know if it legal to host porn sites in Ireland. If it is then they shouldn't be stoppping people registering domain names like this, however if porn sites are not allowed then they would be in rights to not allow them be registered.

slightly off topic does anybody know if any of the sex shops in ireland have their own website and if so are they .ie domains and are the names adult in nature?

Is there some reason porn.ie would have to be an adult site?
For example maybe it could be a site informing people of the laws governing pornography in ireland.

I've a domain name with the word 'sex' in the title (more saucy than graphic though). You have to go through piles of red tape with the IEDR if you want a name with 'sex'....prove that it's a legitimate business and it doesn't sell anything that's illegal in Ireland, but it's the same with any other business really. I think the IEDR is quite right to do this, otherwise god knows what type of sites would emerge under .ie.

You could get porn.ie if you could show that what you're providing wasn't illegal.

Yeah the whole "why do you want this name and why do you think you deserve it?" question is asked.

In any case, getting a name through the IEDR is a doddle in comparison to getting an account with Realex or Worldpay....(unless you don't need to take payments and are offering your stuff for free, for the general good of society, like :D )

Yes they will but only if you add two digits to it...or you could register a RBN that is your name and claim it under that.

I found them to be the opposite, actually...even had a good giggle with them. As said before, you can get any name you want once it's a legitimate business. Wouldn't like .ie to become as polluted as .com, where it takes ages to find what you're looking for and even then, you're wondering whether you're going to be scammed or not.

What exactly do you have to provide them with to get an ordinary .ie name ? Does one have to register the name as a business name or as a company or something like that ???

I registered a .ie address for a band and had to provide posters and cd inlay cards. You need to prove a valid link between the name requested and your business.

You can get your name as a dot ie domain name if you word up a crafty email, see here:

And they gave you the dot ie address. Thought they were a bit more strict than that. Any adresses I've registered with them were for companies and they wanted the CRO number before they would proceed.

Yep. The amount of 'proof' is related to the category that you apply under :

    http://www.blacknight.ie/irishdomains.0.html

    I applied under this one...

    Discretionary Name

Required: Any evidence showing a connection between the applicant and the proposed domain name.

Options: Each application will be assessed on its own merit.

Looks like that US woman still didn't get melan.ie

But they allow cybersquatting of radio amatuer call signs, even though these are awarded by comreg

BTW: If anyone from the IE Domain Registry is looking at this, and you can't get them from comreg then most of them are here http://www.irts.ie/callbook/index.html

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 279 ✭✭Aoife-FM104

They allow squatters, redirects, murder.ie, but not porn???

    :confused::confused::confused::confused:

Please someone explain before my head explodes

All I had to do if prove why I needed it and why I deserve the name.
