Tutorial Request Thread

I suggest a sticky where people can ask for tutorials on things they'd like to see covered. I can see request threads cropping up occasionally until the day boards dies.

Also, such a thread would encourage people to think about what kind of things they'd like done.

So, anyone have any requests, pop 'em up here.

    Watermarking please.

I've just spent the last hour going through crap ones I found through google.

Even if nobody wants to do a whole tutorial could they point me in the direction of a good one please?

Well I haven't figured out how to make it small and stick it in a corner of the photo yet, and idealy I'd like an action to do it.

Below is my QSL Card,I've been trying to design a new one using one of my own pics.

For starters I can't even seem to get large letters, the biggest is not even as big as 'Ireland' in the pic below.

So any help with how to add Text/Graphics would be appreciated.

It's called selective colouring. Keep an eye out on this thread, I'll post a full tutorial there tomorrow.

    *** EDIT: Actually, have a look now... I already upped a tutorial :) ***

    Anything, to be honest.

I am about to learn about those masks, but basic techniques for:
    Red Eye reduction
Framing (without loaded frames and with downloaded frames)
How to stick some adjustments only to one layer (maybe it is in the layer tutorial)
How to make my pictures look good.
And lot's of next. I am totaly lame talking about photoshop, so anything you post (from your experience) will be welcomed, greeted and rewarded. Well, rewarded..., maybe it will be rewarded, if it is posted by woman ;-)

    Hi
this is a good tool for changing the colour of eyes ... but for example
if you need to remove tan lines ... its not working well for me ..

Im sampling a colour from an area of tanned skin and applying it to the
white area ?? it's not working so well .. I have tried changing from color . hue , saturation .. and tried sampling continous or once ... none work very well ..
how is this tool used best and what would people use for changing skin colour ..?

Also it worked well for me when i was removing a sunburnt nose!!
when i sampled the cheek colour it worked ok .. so why it shouldn't work for tan lines ??

So here comes the time I won't be able to ride my bike and I am going to spend more time indoors. And I would like to get some skills (basic and later advanced) of Photoshop.

What could you advice me to do? Which book shall I start studying and using to make some progress in PS work? Are there any online lessons you can recommend?

I am ready to spend some money on book, if it is recommended by you (if you are NOT publishers) and if it is good book.

Please, let me know what can I do to get good background of PS skills to work on more detailed and specific tasks.

I'm always wary of PS books. I much prefer videos for learning PS.
I learned a lot from the ptotoshop TV podcast, (tho I think they're sharging for the back catalogue now). I have most of the early ones backed up tho, I can send you a DVD if you like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

I haev restricted acces to TV, so I'll appreciate any materials to study.
I started even dowloading some videos, but most of the time, it's fake :-/

They're computer video files on a DVD (*.mov i think) not DVD movies...

    Hey!

Could someone do a tutorial with borders with shadows?

I've checked google but any drop shadow tutorials that come back are related to dropshadows with graphics not photos

    thanks

As stated in the title, what would you recommend as the learning base for using Light Room presets?

I am talking about written infornation, video tutorials and preset-sets. Basically links would be the best ;)

at the moment i am using picasa 3 to crop straighten and basic fixes to my shots. the only way i can upload to boards.ie is to export them first to pix.ie and then from there to boards. is there any way i can export direct from picasa3 to boards.ie. sorry not too fast on the whole laptop world. i am new to dslr and boards.ie and pix.ie so any help would be great. also i like picasa and am just getting used to it. thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,393 ✭✭✭AnCatDubh

nope - you are doing it the way most of us using, pix.ie, photoshop, the gimp, picassa, etc... do it.

I think lightroom has flickr capability built in, not sure about photoshop.

Picassa can export directly to picassa web and you can link them here to boards, but what you gain in the export directly you probably will lose as pix.ie has hand vBulletin code built in for posting to forum and sizes images (i'd like to think) just for us here on boards.

but you are currently doing what most of us are doing. Don't worry it get like old hat after a while.

    hope that helps.

Curves are amazing and wonderful magical things that can do a great deal for a photo in a very short space of time if used correctly. (and can have absolutely disastrous consequences if used wrong.

I think I could try a stab at a tutorial on curves sometime. (It won't be tonight though.)

Do you have any particular questions about them you want answered? (I'm thinking not.. it sounds like you just don't quite "get" them.)

This might be a tough tutorial to do with out videos..and without a lot of background on other things as well.
    Curves.
What are they and how do I use them?

OK so most of us can correct the dreaded red eye.
However many of us I'm sure have lovely portraits missing that special ingredient eye sparkle.
Is there an easy fix in the red eye way(substitute red with sparkle) or is it purely down to somewhat more tedious processing, especially when there is no red eye present in the first place.
    Many thanks in advance.

Do you mean catchlights? If they aren't there to begin with it's hard to create them and make them look believable.

the one area i am stuck on at the moment is cropping,i use aperature and know how to do an actual crop but then when i go to have the shots printed i loose quality.I seem to be over cropping if thats possible !
so i need to know when you know enough is enough without loosing quality

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,393 ✭✭✭AnCatDubh

As a general rule (there may be different variations to this), but think in terms of the resulting size of the image in pixels being the equivalent of dots of print. Ideally you need 300 dpi (i've also seen 320, and 360 specified), so if you want to print a 6x4 then multiply the print size by 300 (being 1800 x 1200 in this example) to tell you how many pixels / dots that you need in your resulting image.

Note the mediums that utilise pixels and dots are different (former being screen, latter being print) but for the purposes that you are trying to work out, think of them as the same (just keep in mind you would understand them differently if talking to a web designer or a book designer).

Thus, if you crop to a size which leaves less than 1800 x 1200 as your image dimensions (in the above example) then you will find the quality will begin to suffer. The less pixels you have (height x width) the poorer the quality of the image. That said you can generally get away with a lot less than a value of 300 in the calculations above. 200 certainly is a reasonable figure to be working with if 300 isn't an option. Again if a 6x4 then @ 200 it would equate to 1200 x 800. This would be a reasonable size to get a 6x4 print out of.

I recently saw an image of 850px on the longest side being printed in the newspaper @ 12" x 8.5" (hah! buggers lifted it off my web page, so I was astounded what they could do with an 850px wide image). As per the general rule calculations above they should only have been able to produce something about 3" x 1.5" maybe or 4" x 2" if they used the value of 200 but they were able to go really big - i'm guessing that newspaper print doesn't need such a large number of dots per inch.

i will try it all out

    Hi Guys and Gods,
I got allowed to take some shots of a private motorcross meeting on saturday last. I never did anything like this before and was fairly pleased with some of the shots. However someway thru the settings on the camera changed;) and all the later shots are all over exposed. As i said new experience and nerves, anyhow when I get them into picasa is there any way to darken or bring back the image. As far as I can see the only option is to brighten the shots. All help appreciated. Thanks, Paddy.

I don't use picassa but google threw up this:
    http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-adjust-digital-image-exposure-with-picasa.html

If you want install the GIMP and have a look at curves. It'll do exactly what you want.

A big thanks 5uspect, downloaded gimp and rescued the shots. Now I gotta learn all about gimp:D. Thanks again, P,
