I built a PC not too far back for a friend of mine, it was working perfectly for a few months until recently. He told me the PC had been infected with some viruses and was going to reinstall windows, everything has gone wrong from there! Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated..

Here are the original PC components :

    Cooler Master Centurion 5 Black/Silver
NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3550A, 16x, Dual, Black OEM
    Sony Floppy Drive, 3,5" 1,44MB Black,Internal
Gigabyte 3D Rocket cooler pro, 80mm fan
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound 3.5Gram
    Gainward GeForce 6800GS 512MB,1,4ns DDR3
    PCI-Express,"BP6800GS-512-GLH-TV-DVI"
    ABIT Fatal1ty AN8 SLI,nForce4 SLI,Socket
    -939,ATX,S-ATA,GbLAN,Firewire,PCI-Ex16
    Crucial PC3200 DDR-DIMM 1024MB CL3 5ns
    Unbuffered, Non-parity, 2.5V,128Meg x 64
    Samsung Pleomax Optical Rainbow Mouse,Black
    Logitech Media Keyboard Elite PS/2/USB
    Samsung 19" LCD Syncmaster 913N TCO03 Monitor, Silver, 8ms
    Seasonic S12 Powersupply 430W, 120mm Fan, 2xSATA, ATX/EPS, 20/24pin
    AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2GHz Socket 939, 1MB, BOXED w/fan
Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 Software English OEM
    Creative I-Trigue 3330 (2.1 Speaker system)
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 250GB SATA2 8MB 7200RPM
    Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PRO DDR 1024MB
    Kit w/two matched 512MB 3200C2 PRO's DIM

I have the PC in my house right now. Everything inside looks fine, no visible issues. The LCD panel from the MB shows fans running and CPU at normal speed and cool ( 28 Degrees ) PC shows flash screen on boot, DMI pools and launches XP which takes about 10 minutes to get to the desktop (Load bar scrolls extremely slowly) and when i'm on the desktop nothing responds.

One more thing to point out, it's not just Windows that is being slow, it's definatly the machine. I used KillDisk to format and it took 16 hours to complete, my friend tells me it took between 9-10 hours to reinstall windows. How a machine can run so slow without something just being obviously broken and not working is something i'm trying to figure out.
    Top minds roll up....!

In the BIOS menu when the computer boots up, try setting back to the default values and see if that makes any difference.

    LMFAO that worked.
I'm such a tool, i didn't realise fail safe defaults have been active which obviously slowed performance. I activated Optimised and it's running like a beast again..!! Thanks very much

Ya, happened me when i was overclocking. I cleared cmos & forgot to select "load optimised defaults" before re-setting my oc. Wrecked my head till i cleared cmos again. It was only the next day it occured to me why i had probs.
