Hand From Cue Club Team Event

First off, big up to Connie and the lads down there for organising a great tournament. Really enjoyable night of poker.

The 2 donks on my team are well gone. 17 players left.

I'm chip leader with 85k. The villain in this hand is UTG+1 and has 76k. I'm the BB. He was at my previous table and raised quite regularly, only showing down good hands. We have played about 10 hands at a new table and this is his first raise.

    Blinds are 1.5k/3k with a 300 ante.

He raises to 10k and I decide to get tricky by flat calling from the BB with KK.

Flop is AJ6 all clubs. I have the king of clubs. I check and villain bets 12k. I call.

    Turn is a seven.

I check and he bets 25k.

    River is another jack.

I check and he thinks and pushes for 30k. I call.

    Comments on all streets appreciated.

Fantastic call IMO. The villain in this hand is obviously a complete fish who thinks he can bully you. There are very few hands apart from the absolutes or a total bluff that he is betting the whole way down. Great call.

I think you turned it into a tricky hand. What you do preflop depends on history with villain, I think. Call is fine. But I think you should have shown strength at some stage. Not necessarily an all-in on the flop (although in a tournament I think that's fine, and probably a good move), but I really don't like your passive line on the turn and the river.

Edit: Okay, from Daithio's reply, what are we missing? I think I'm way off in this hand. But I'm just in the door, still drunk, and going for more.

looks a bit like a bluff to me, love the passive line getting villian to kamikaze all his chips.

Easy call really. I mean, the villain raises in EP and represents flush on flop (but with the Kc in your hand and the Ac on board, what flush exactly can he have?) ... then by the river he's representing a FH or quads. I'd definitely smell a rat here. My chips beat his into the pot.

What did the fish have in this hand anyway?

IanMcTellbag, I'm sure you've guessed by now, but Rob and I also knew you were the "villain" when we posted our, erm, analysis. UL GG ;)

    The fishy tellbag had 89s

In fairness you nearly got the bluff through. It took her a few minutes to finally call, and you probably would have got it through against anyone else.

i thought the second post gave it away and daithios comfirmed the hero was the villian.
i think she played the hand poorly up to the river but "There are very few hands apart from the absolutes or a total bluff that he is betting the whole way down. Great call." AJ was possible but a 1/2 pot bet on the flop with 3 clubs made it veery unlikly

I can have AA JJ AK AQc AJ 66 77 in this spot. I was UTG+1 so my range should be(and is) alot tighter. For example, I definitely wouldnt raise 89s into 8 other players :p

I made the mistake of thinking that she had folding equity on the river, as she'd have still had 40k left which was the average stack at the time.

    wow Ian.
Nice one man what a call.did you get a read on villain or something?
I bet villain was giving up tells left.right and centre …
All the same nice call and I would have done the same ,the villain is so obviously bluffing here and you busted them here with your great call.
That will teach villain to play better poker and protect a big stack better than this.

I know. It was obvious Ian was the villain even before anyone replied because he wouldn't play kings this way. I was just trying to piss him off.

Im just p*d off that she piddled all those chips away to come 6th. That was 1/4 of the chips in play with 16 remaining!

    Nice one on inverting identities,;)

However, you seem to have committed hari - kari on this hand. I think the real question is why, considering your comfortable chip position, you decided to raise into the pot UTG + 1 with 89?? Now I know that we have significant stylistic differences in our approach to the game, but this doesn't seem neccesary to me. Of course you still need to make plays and can't just wait around for the boots, but I feel that it was a poor decision to get involved in this spot.

Moreover, any hand that has called you on the turn won't be able to fold to a last gasp push of 30,000 into a 100,000 approx pot. You have little or no folding equity on the end;but should really have check / folded after being called on the flop.

Having said all of that - good performance to get to that spot in the tourney. I hope you all had a good weekend.

    Hi Lloyd,

When I get a big stack I play aggressively, simple as that. I wont just wait for big pairs or big aces, though I wont just raise any bag of bollix from EP. The table was also playing extremely tight and stealing the blinds and antes was worth 7.2k, nearly 10% of my stack. All my team had busted so I was only playing to win. Lots of players were still playing for the team prizes so couldnt afford to get involved with me, even with decent hands.

On the river I think she has folding equity. If she folds she has an average stack. If she calls and loses she's got one round of the table left. I know that she only called on the flop and turn because of the nut flush draw.

I firmly believe she would have folded the river if tehre hadn't been a huge crowd gathered round to watch the hand with Connie on the mike, as it meant there was ten times as much pressure on her.

I'm happy how I played the hand and every spectator thought the call was unbelievable.
