do you have a film you think beats all other this year? for me it's probably The Wind That Shakes The Barley. It really opened my eyes to the seperation over the treaty. I learned about it in History, but I had no idea it was like this (even if it is dramaticised)

Hmmm, i'm missed out a lot lately, i haven't been to the cinema in months!!!!!

But to be honest, i've kept an eye on listings lately and there is NOTHING that i'd pay money to go and see at the moment!!!!

So i couldn't honestly say it's been an great year for films... nothing that stands out for me.

'Little Miss Sunshine' was without doubt the best film i've seen this year!

    The Departed.

Sorry, everybody who likes the kid at the pangeant one, but it was obvious, and illustrates how our standards have been gradually eroded over the years.

Children of men, probably won't be as good on the small screen but in the cinema it was so immersive. Class film

    Loved Little Miss Sunshine,

I've yet to see Children of Men so my opinion might change soon. :)

    What..?!

It was brillantly written (mix of both hilarious and very intelligent dialogue), acting from all involved was phenomenal, fantastic score and soundtrack.

There was nothing obvious about it.. but clearly there's no accounting for taste!

See, this is the trouble with opinions. Everybody has one, and no two are the same! I can only express mine.

The Departed and Children of Men are two that really stand out for me this year. Very poor year for summer blockbusters.

    the departed without a doubt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,437 ✭✭✭Crucifix

I'm bad at this type of thing because, much like the oscars, I forget films more than a month or two old. I guess Snakes on a Plane and Little Miss Sunshine would be front-runners.

the departed was very good so was Volver.two that stand out for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

    As already stated.

    Little Miss Sunshine
    The Departed
    Children of Men.

    in that order.

Hahaha, how exactly was Little Miss Sunshine obvious? Go on.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,002 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

'Little Miss Sunshine' and 'Children of Men'. I honestly think it's insulting to say that liking the former is a sign that our standards have eroded! I find that the reason so many people like it is that it's not that our standards have eroded, it's that mainstream Hollywood has and when something like this comes along, that finally has good standards, we have something to love.

Syriana, the last film i saw that I would give 5/5,although I don't know if this was strictly out in 2006.

Urge Urge, shove, push, get it out!!!!!

Children of Men and V for Vendetta

For me Children of Men, Crank and United 93 are the standout films of 2006 (I have yet to see The Departed).

i'll concur with other posters that this has been an appalling year for films. i used to go every week but theres been nothing which appealed to me sinces superman returns (and that wasnt even that great:( )

i havent seen children of men even though i meant to but just cant work up the enthusiam. gas thing is its the only thing out now that id even consider going to see as im not really into mob films ala the departed (which is apparently very good but not my cup of tea)

i guess if i had to pick one that i have seen this year i'll go with V for Vendetta. its the only one where when i left i genuinely felt "that was great". sadly not a sentiment i felt often this year:( :(

    Snakes on a Plane?

    Anybody?

    No?
    seconded

and children of men. aren't we all a similar bunch :)

haven't seen little miss sinshine or the departed but i think i will now

    Breakfast on Pluto

Taladega Nights and Borat were both very funny. Need to see The Departed and Children of Men though

The ending of Little Miss Sunshine,
when they all get up to dance,
    is pure genious.

It's giving the finger to that pageant audience, and what they stand for.

Probably one of the best feeling endings I've ever seen.

    Haven't seen The Departed yet

But I enjoyed Talladega Nights, and disliked The Wind That shakes the Barley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

Clerks 2, talladega Nights and snakes on a Plane.
    That's the stuff for me.

I still have a soft spot for Brick, but Little Miss Sunshine is also spectacularly good. The Squid and the Whale & The Departed were excellent as well.

apart from about 3 brilliant scenes, Clearks 2 sucked so much a$$ it put german pr0n to shame

I'd also like to add both 'United 93' and 'Brick' to my favourite films of the year.. probably top 3 would be:

    1. Little Miss Sunshine
    2. United 93
    3. Brick

Still itching to pre-order the region 2 of LMS.. but haven't seen it anywhere! Apparently it's got a Region 1 release date of December but no announcements for the R2 (should be soon after).

Planning to go see 'The Departed' tomorrow night.. looking forward to a bit of Scorsese! :D

    Pirates 2 ;)

The Departed and Children Of Men too :D

I haven't been to the theater in forever.
I can barely think of what I've seen this year.

Pirates was good... I saw Casanova, but didn't like it.
I can't even remember anything else I've seen, although I know I've seen more movies...

    Little Miss Sunshine

Also enjoyed Brick and the Squid and the Whale very weird but good, left an impression which i cant say for most films i watch

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 460 ✭✭Lurk

Best: Children of Men, although haven't seen The Departed yet and that sounds bloody brill from the reviews
Worst: I'd say Underworld: Evolution (of course), but the year is young and Casino Royale hasn't come out yet :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

    1. The Science of Sleep
    2. Brick
    3. A Scanner Darkly

Haven't had a chance to see Little Miss Sunshine yet and looking forward to Borats film!

In fairness, 90% of all the films mentioned here have been in the last two months.,
We really need a list of ALL films made this year.

There's a really good film festival every year here in Germany and they always manage to get a few nice early previews. Brick was voted the num 1 film at this years festival!

    List of films:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_in_film#Wide-release_movies

From what I've seen a few lines :) Scores are relative (A trashy blockbuster is rated diferently from something more serious)

Munich (Possibly 2005): Superb. Classic spielberg. 8/10

V For Vendetta: Really surprised by this. Thought it was great. 7/10

Inside Man: Again really surprised by this. Enjoyable. 7/10

United 93: One of the best of the year. Paul Greengrass continues to impress me. 9/10

Mission Impossible 3: Again, quite enjoyable. Best of the series. Fast paced with super action scenes. 7.5/10

Poseidon: Hate to say, while the film was a bit crap, I really enjoyed this way more then I should have. 7/10

Over The Hedge: Liked this. Better then Cars imo.

X-Men: Not the biggest fan of X-man, but I quite enjoyed this aswell. Not as good as two, but better then 1.

Cars: Disapointing. Not funny enough. Pixars weakest yet.

Superman Returns: A bit bland I thought.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Enjoyable romp. Not as good as the first though.

You, Me and Dupree: Not fnny enough either, and I usually like Owen Wilson

Talledega Nights: Hilarious. Nuff said. Best comedy so far (Borat will hopefully knock it off top spot)

World Trade Center: Thought it was good. Better then I was expecting, and also not quite what I was expecting

Crank: Excellent, fast paced action film. Superb

The Departed: Brilliant. Acting was great.

Children Of Men: Also great. Cinematography was amazing.

The Wind that shakes the Barley is one of the most moving films I've ever seen. Outstanding acting. Ordered the DVD from play.com yesterday.

From what I saw, A Scanner Darkly. I unfortunetly missed alot of great films this year, but I'm gonna check them out as soon as they are realised on DVD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,747 ✭✭✭MikeHoncho

I really want to say Brick but i think il need to have another watch first.

I cant disagree with anyone who said Little Miss Sunshine or Children Of Men as I thought both were fantastic.

Off to see The Departed tonight so maybe that will be the best.

I think il go with Little Miss Sunshine for best so far. Great script, great performances and I felt all gooey inside at the end.

United '93 and Harsh Times get my vote for best film of the year. I'm still to see children of Men and little Miss Sunshine.

I haven't been to the cinema that much this year, but I would have to say Little Miss Sunshine and X-Men 3 were the best I've seen
