want to put an end to this mystery for once and for all!

each time I start my computer, Msn msgr, yahoo msgr and voipcheap all launch, even after having changed the msconfig settings. Why is this? I've tried changing the msconfig settings a number of times now, so this is why I am asking here, if anyone could please help...

check your start >> programs >> startup folder.

make sure there aren't any programs like msn in there.

MSN and Yahoo (at least) all have options to stop it loading when Windows launches, I suggest you look within their options or preferences, they are all on the first sheet I think. Just untick the boxes beside Automatically load when Windows starts, or similar.

yep ....so for MSN Mess ..... tools > options> general

and remove tick from "auto run messenger when I log on to Windows"

Not good enough I'm afraid. There's many ways in which programs can startup outside of being in the 'startup' folder.

You need a tool like 'Tidy Startup' to identify programs that use registry entries and legacy windows .ini files to startup automatically.

i know it's not good enough, but i was just stating one of the many ways in which files can get started at start up.

my solution is often the most neglected.

    start > run > msconfig

click the startup tab and uncheck anything you dislike. make sure you search google for anything you don't recognise first though :)
