If TG4 (Even less popular and not as rich as rte) Can do a streaming service such as this
Why cant our national broadcaster do the same????

"Because they are shite" is the short answer.

Can't afford the copyright, quite simply. Virtually -everything- they make themselves is kept online for viewing for literally ages, though. Late Late, Off The Rails, Show Me The Money, Prime Time, Nationwide, the news, etc.

TG4 blank a lot of content, plus their viewership for the other content is so low that the additional copyright is a pittance. Only very rich channels (channel 4) or very small ones (rapture, etc) can afford to stream online, the likes of RTE can't.

A large proportion of people in Ireland can't get access to Broadband, (it's not available) and those that do only get a fairly sh*te service compared to abroad. Without Broadband, streaming online is a fools game. This summer when Cork and Kerry replayed the Munster Gaelic Football Final it clashed with other televised fixtures and was streamed online instead. I reckon the amount of people that could see it could be either squashed into a Mini or Public Telephone Box.

RTE have recently upgraded their network to support video streaming. Under the new UEFA rules they have to make the Champions League games they cover available online. You'll start to see more content available online in the next few months.

RTE has set up a major data center in City West and is now a full member of INEX, the Irish Internet Exchange. So things are improving.

Unfortunately for the Cork v Kerry match, I couldn't watch it as it didn't think I was living in Ireland (I'm on NTL Ireland cable BB in Dublin).

The NTL cable in Dublin will eventually realise it is Ireland, if not so already.

Just to bring this back to the topic in hand, RTE streamed a Bernard Dunne fight a few months back. Courtesy of a modded xbox running Xbox Media Center, I was able to stream it thru the xbox and watch it on my 32" tv. Picture qulaity was from fair, a bit pixelated on long range shots, but overall it was a good experience.

As for the football, I did not watch it, I forgot it was on :)

It would be interesting if other sporting events could be shown this way, maybe an archive would be good too. As you say, the pickup of broadband in Ireland is not great, mainly due to the unavailibilty of it and the somewhat high costs when compared to other countries, so there can't be that much strain involved :)

    Mjsmyth,

Can i ask you, is it hard to MOD an xbox, i know a guy on adverts.ie will do it! do you have to install xbox media center on this and how easy is it to connect to source to stream? do you type in a url or access the web directly from the xbox???

    thanks

RTE already stream all Champions League, some FAI, and recently the Bernard Dunne boxing match. This used to be outsourced, but RTE are now in a position to do it themselves due to recent infrastructure upgrades and membership of INEX.

The Munster Final replay during the summer was one of the biggest streaming events in Ireland and nearly 1.4 gigs of traffic was pushed. Broadband infrastructure in Ireland has a long way to go.

From early next year, expect to see RTE.ie streaming the TV news live for starters. They already have a very comprehensive on-demand video news service tied into the news web site www.rte.ie/news.

As others have pointed out, there are issues with copyright for most content.
